Multihop data delivery through vehicular ad hoc networks is complicated by the fact that vehicular networks are highly mobile and frequently disconnected. To address this issue, we adopt the idea of carry and forward, where a moving vehicle carries a packet until a new vehicle moves into its vicinity and forwards the packet. Being different from existing carry and forward solutions, we make use of predictable vehicle mobility, which is limited by traffic pattern and road layout. Based on the existing traffic pattern, a vehicle can find the next road to forward the packet to reduce the delay. We propose several vehicle-assisted data delivery (VADD) protocols to forward the packet to the best road with the lowest data-delivery delay. Experimental results show that the proposed VADD protocols outperform existing so- lutions in terms of packet-delivery ratio, data packet delay, and protocol overhead. Among the proposed VADD protocols, the Hybrid Probe (H-VADD) protocol has a much better performance.

VADD: Vehicle-Assisted Data Delivery in Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

One of the most engaging challenges for mobile operators today is how to manage the exponential data traffic increase. Mobile data offloading stands out as a promising and low-cost solution to reduce the burden on the cellular network. To make this possible, we need a new hybrid network paradigm that leverages the existence of multiple alternative communication channels. This entails significant modifications in the way data are handled, affecting also the behavior of network protocols. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey of data offloading techniques in cellular networks and extract the main requirements needed to integrate data offloading capabilities into today's mobile networks. We classify existing strategies into two main categories, according to their requirements in terms of content delivery guarantees: delayed and nondelayed offloading. We overview the technical aspects and discuss the state of the art in each category. Finally, we describe in detail the novel functionalities needed to implement mobile data offloading in the access network, as well as current and future research challenges in the field, with an eye toward the design of hybrid architectures.

Data Offloading Techniques in Cellular Networks: A Survey

Cellular networks are currently facing the challenges of mobile data explosion. High-end mobile phones and laptops double their mobile data traffic every year and this trend is expected to continue given the rapid development of mobile social applications. It is imperative that novel architectures be developed to handle such voluminous mobile data. In this paper, we propose and evaluate an integrated architecture exploiting the opportunistic networking paradigm to migrate data traffic from cellular networks to metropolitan WiFi access points (APs). To quantify the benefits of deploying such an architecture, we consider the case of bulk file transfer and video streaming over 3G networks and simulate data delivery using real mobility data set of 500 taxis in an urban area. We are the first to quantitatively evaluate the gains of citywide WiFi offloading using large scale real traces. Our results give the numbers of APs needed for different requirements of quality of service for data delivery in large metropolitan area. We show that even with a sparse WiFi network the delivery performance can be significantly improved. This effort serves as an important feasibility study and provides guidelines for operators to evaluate the possibility and cost of this solution. Cellular Traffic Offloading through WiFi Networks

There are currently a large variety of wireless access networks, including the emerging vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). A large variety of applications utilizing these networks will demand features such as real-time, high-availability, and even instantaneous high-bandwidth in some cases. Therefore, it is imperative for network service providers to make the best possible use of the combined resources of available heterogeneous networks (wireless area networks (WLANs), Universal Mobile Telecommunications Systems, VANETs, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), etc.) for connection support. When connections need to migrate between heterogeneous networks for performance and high-availability reasons, seamless vertical handoff (VHO) is a necessary first step. In the near future, vehicular and other mobile applications will be expected to have seamless VHO between heterogeneous access networks. With regard to VHO performance, there is a critical need to develop algorithms for connection management and optimal resource allocation for seamless mobility. In this paper, we develop a VHO decision algorithm that enables a wireless access network to not only balance the overall load among all attachment points (e.g., base stations and access points) but also maximize the collective battery lifetime of mobile nodes (MNs). In addition, when ad hoc mode is applied to 3/4G wireless data networks, VANETs, and IEEE 802.11 WLANs for a more seamless integration of heterogeneous wireless networks, we devise a route-selection algorithm for forwarding data packets to the most appropriate attachment point to maximize collective battery lifetime and maintain load balancing. Results based on a detailed performance evaluation study are also presented here to demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed algorithms.

Vertical Handoff Decision Algorithms for Providing Optimized Performance in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks

Spectrum sharing is a novel opportunistic strategy to improve spectral efficiency of wireless networks. Much of the research to quantify such a gain is done under the premise that the spectrum is being used inefficiently by the primary network. Our main result is that even in a spectrally efficient network, device to device users can exploit the network topology to render gains in additional throughput. The focus will be on providing ad-hoc multihop access to a network for device to device users, that are transparent to the primary wireless cellular network, while sharing the primary network's resources.

Cellular networks with an overlaid device to device network

In third-generation (3G) wireless data networks, providing service to low data-rate users is required for maintaining fairness, but at the cost of reducing the cell's aggregate throughput. In this paper, we propose the unified cellular and ad hoc network (UCAN) architecture for enhancing cell throughput while maintaining fairness. In UCAN, a mobile client has both 3G interface and IEEE 802.11 -based peer-to-peer links. The 3G base station forwards packets for destination clients with poor channel quality to proxy clients with better channel quality. The proxy clients then use an ad hoc network composed of other mobile clients and IEEE 802.11 wireless links to forward the packets to the appropriate destinations, thereby improving cell throughput. We refine the 3G base station scheduling algorithm so that the throughput gains are distributed in proportion to users' average channel rates, thereby maintaining fairness. With the UCAN architecture in place, we propose novel greedy and on-demand protocols for proxy discovery and ad hoc routing that explicitly leverage the existence of the 3G infrastructure to reduce complexity and improve reliability. We further propose secure crediting mechanisms to motivate users that are not actively receiving to participate in relaying packets for others. Through both analysis and extensive simulations with HDR and IEEE 802.11b, we show that the UCAN architecture can increase individual user's throughput by more than 100 percent and the aggregate throughput of the HDR downlink by up to 50 percent.
