Three parallel algorithms for classical molecular dynamics are presented. The first assigns each processor a fixed subset of atoms; the second assigns each a fixed subset of inter-atomic forces to compute; the third assigns each a fixed spatial region. The algorithms are suitable for molecular dynamics models which can be difficult to parallelize efficiently—those with short-range forces where the neighbors of each atom change rapidly. They can be implemented on any distributed-memory parallel machine which allows for message-passing of data between independently executing processors. The algorithms are tested on a standard Lennard-Jones benchmark problem for system sizes ranging from 500 to 100,000,000 atoms on several parallel supercomputers--the nCUBE 2, Intel iPSC/860 and Paragon, and Cray T3D. Comparing the results to the fastest reported vectorized Cray Y-MP and C90 algorithm shows that the current generation of parallel machines is competitive with conventional vector supercomputers even for small problems. For large problems, the spatial algorithm achieves parallel efficiencies of 90% and a 1840-node Intel Paragon performs up to 165 faster than a single Cray C9O processor. Trade-offs between the three algorithms and guidelines for adapting them to more complex molecular dynamics simulations are also discussed.

Recent years have seen a rapid growth of interest by the scientific and engineering communities in the thermal properties of materials. Heat removal has become a crucial issue for continuing progress in the electronic industry, and thermal conduction in low-dimensional structures has revealed truly intriguing features. Carbon allotropes and their derivatives occupy a unique place in terms of their ability to conduct heat. The room-temperature thermal conductivity of carbon materials span an extraordinary large range--of over five orders of magnitude--from the lowest in amorphous carbons to the highest in graphene and carbon nanotubes. Here, I review the thermal properties of carbon materials focusing on recent results for graphene, carbon nanotubes and nanostructured carbon materials with different degrees of disorder. Special attention is given to the unusual size dependence of heat conduction in two-dimensional crystals and, specifically, in graphene. I also describe the prospects of applications of graphene and carbon materials for thermal management of electronics.

Thermal properties of graphene and nanostructured carbon materials

Similar to its popular older cousins the fullerene, the carbon nanotube, and graphene, the latest form of nanocarbon, the carbon nanodot, is inspiring intensive research efforts in its own right. These surface-passivated carbonaceous quantum dots, so-called C-dots, combine several favorable attributes of traditional semiconductor-based quantum dots (namely, size- and wavelength-dependent luminescence emission, resistance to photobleaching, ease of bioconjugation) without incurring the burden of intrinsic toxicity or elemental scarcity and without the need for stringent, intricate, tedious, costly, or inefficient preparation steps. C-dots can be produced inexpensively and on a large scale (frequently using a one-step pathway and potentially from biomass waste-derived sources) by many approaches, ranging from simple candle burning to in situ dehydration reactions to laser ablation methods. In this Review, we summarize recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of C-dots. We also speculate on their future and discuss potential developments for their use in energy conversion/storage, bioimaging, drug delivery, sensors, diagnostics, and composites.

Activation of dinitrogen (N2) is the critical step in nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) in ammonia synthesis. In this paper, reaction mechanisms of N2 activation on trimetallic clusters Mo2M (M = Li, Na, K, Mg, and Ca) and Mo3−xCax (x = 2–3) were systematically studied by density functional theory calculations. Unlike Mo2 which is inert to N2, clusters with alkali or alkaline earth metal atoms have much higher reactivity toward N2 in terms of both thermodynamics and kinetics. Particularly, in one reaction path of N2 with MoCa2, all the intermediates and transition states are well below the energy sum of the reactants, indicating that the dissociation of N2 on MoCa2 can take place spontaneously in gas-phase reactions. N2 transfers on clusters with different coordination modes, and the N−N bond is gradually activated. When N2 is bonded with three metal atoms with end-on: side-on: side-on coordination mode, it is fully activated and easily dissociated into two adsorbed N atoms. These results may serve as a prototype to design single-cluster catalysts with a trimetallic center for nitrogen activation and conversion.

Exploring trimetallic clusters containing alkali and alkaline earth metal atoms with high activity for nitrogen activation

Method for optimizing intelligent parking path in environment of Internet of things

Mizolastine is a selective histamine H1 receptor antagonist for chronic urticaria or allergic rhinitis. We investigated whether the variant genotypes of metabolic enzymes UGT1A1, CYP3A5 and transporter ABCB1 influence pharmacokinetic phenotype of substrate mizolastine in Chinese volunteers. Genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms in UGT1A1*6 (G211A), CYP3A5*3 (A6986G) and ABCB1 (C3435T) was determined by the pyrosequencing method. After a single oral dose of 10 mg mizolastine, the plasma concentrations were measured using validated high-performance liquid chromatography in 24 Chinese healthy volunteers. The results showed that the distributions of wild-type homozygotes and variant allele carriers (the sum of variant heterozygotes and variant homozygotes) were as follows: 17 cases (70.8%) versus seven cases (29.2%) in UGT1A1*6 genotypes, five cases (20.8%) versus 19 cases (79.2%) in CYP3A5*3 genotypes and seven cases (29.2%) versus 17 cases (70.8%) in ABCB1 3435T genotypes, respectively. There were no significant differences in pharmacokinetic parameters of mizolastine between the variant allele UGT1A1*6, CYP3A5*3 and ABCB1 3435T carriers and the wild-type homozygotes, and the ratios were as follows: Cmax was 101.03%, 86.02% and 105.78%; Tmax was 162.35%, 98.98% and 144.90%; AUC0-28 was 113.04%, 77.35% and 112.71%; and t1/2 was 95.77%, 72.40% and 100.97%, respectively. In conclusion, these results suggested that the UGT1A1, CYP3A5 and ABCB1 genetic polymorphisms might be not contributed to the interindividual variation of mizolastine pharmacokinetic phenotype in the Chinese population.

Annular pancreas is in adults is a rare congenital anomaly which incidence varied from 0.005% to 0.015%. Although 33% of the cases are symptomatic, the symptoms are most commonly associated with gastric outlet obstruction. Here we presented an adult diagnosed with annular pancreas treated by laparoscopic Roux-en-Y side to side duodenojejunostomy.
