Bismuth oxide systems exhibit high oxide ion conductivity and have been proposed as good electrolyte materials for applications such as solid oxide fuel cells and oxygen sensors. However, due to their instability under conditions of low oxygen partial pressures there has been difficulty in developing these materials as alternative electrolyte materials compared to the state-of-the-art cubic stabilised zirconia electrolyte. Bismuth oxide and doped bismuth oxide systems exhibit a complex array of structures and properties depending upon the dopant concentration, temperature and atmosphere. In this paper we comprehensively review the structures, thermal expansion, phase transitions, electrical conductivity and stability of bismuth oxide and doped bismuth oxide systems. ©

Bismuth based oxide electrolytes— structure and ionic conductivity

Over the past decade, many efforts have been made to develop new materials exhibiting high oxide ion mobility at low temperature. In addition to the improvements of existing materials, new classes of conductors in which the structure have been shown to play an important role has been proposed. These materials are reviewed according to their structure type. Their performances and limitations are presented and discussed.

Recent Material Developments in Fast Oxide Ion Conductors

In this review article, new systems being investigated for application in solid oxide fuel cells are discussed. For the electrode materials, materials with the perovskite or related structures continue to dominate the field, due to the need for high electronic conductivity. Research in this field is being directed toward compositions allowing high ionic conductivity in addition to their electronic contribution. In contrast, research on new electrolyte materials has shown a diverse range of structure-types, with an apparent tendency toward structures containing cations in lower coordination environments, particularly tetrahedral. In both the electrode and electrolyte area, materials allowing the incorporation of oxygen excess into interstitial sites have shown promising results, warranting further investigations of materials that will allow this type of defect chemistry.

New Chemical Systems for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

During the last three decades, a large number of investigations has been reported pertaining to the science and technology of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) based mainly on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte. Because of the problems associated with the high temperature of operation (~ 1000°C) of the YSZ-based cells, there has been a substantial effort to develop alternative electrolytes with ionic conductivity comparable to that of YSZ at relatively lower temperatures. This review presents a systematic evolution in the area of the development of new electrolytes based on bismuth sesquioxide for fuel cell applications at moderate temperatures.
