Molecular-Micron Multiscale Toughening and Flame Retarding for Polyurethane Foams

Polyurethane foam materials have broad application prospects in practical engineering as flame retardants, waterproof coatings, and grout repair materials due to advantages such as light weight, quick forming, and good durability. Due to water’s low cost and convenience, water-reactive Polyurethane foam materials are widely used in engineering. The content of the water has a significant effect on the performance of polyurethane foams after molding. Polyurethane foams with anti-seepage and reinforcement effects are used in complex water environments for long durations. This study analyzed the effects of water content on properties and the diffusion mechanism of polyurethane foam materials in water. Additionally, the effect of the water environment on the polyurethane grouting material’s properties was summarized. Finally, this study discussed the future research directions of polyurethane foam materials in a water environment.

Preparation and Performance of Water-Active Polyurethane Grouting Material in Engineering: A Review

Research on polyurethane sponge (PUS), a widely used polymer material, and its flame-retardant performance is of great significance. In this study, PUS was modified to prepare a highly efficient flame-retardant composite using a soaking method. The PUS nearly vanished at 11 s after ignition, and the solid residue rate of the PUS was 5.65 wt% at 750 °C. The net structure, composed of nano SiO2, was maintained in the modified PUS at 750 °C, and the solid residue rate was 69.23%. The maximum HRR of the PUS decreased from 617 W/g to 40 W/g and the THR of the sample reduced from 33 kJ/g to 9 kJ/g after modification. The results suggested that the modified PUS gained excellent flame-retardant performance. The flame-retardant layer in the modified PUS was amorphous. The surface of the modified PUS was rich in Si, O, and C elements and lacked a N element, suggesting that inorganic flame retardants were abundant on the surface layer of the modified PUS. The Si-O-C vibration and Si-O-Si stretching in the modified PUS indicates that the organic–inorganic hybrid structure formed on the PUS surface, which could be attributed to the polymerization and condensation of the silica precursor. Thus, the modified PUS provided an excellent flame-retardant layer. The results are of interest for producing efficient flame-retardant PUS using a simple method.

Fabrication of Modified Polyurethane Sponge with Excellent Flame Retardant and the Modification Mechanism

In this work, silica aerogel was modified by 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-1-oxide (DOPO). Then DOPO immobilized silica aerogel nanoparticles were used as flame retardant to prepare flame-retardant polyurethane foams. Microscale combustion calorimeter and cone calorimeter test were employed to evaluate the flame retardancy of polyurethane foams. It was found that both the heat release rate and the total heat release of the composites were reduced with the incorporation of DOPO immobilized silica aerogel. It is speculated that the DOPO-immobilized silica aerogel nanoparticles can inhibit the degradation of polyurethane and catalyze the formation of carbonaceous carbon on the surface.

Improvement of Flame Retardancy of Polyurethane Foam Using DOPO-Immobilized Silica Aerogel

Based on the mechanical properties and microstructure of polyurethane foam solidified material, a two-dimensional model of polyurethane foam solidified material was constructed. Polyurethane foam was obtained by fully and uniformly mixing the two components. The research was carried out through the combination of experimental test and finite element simulation. The experimental results show that when the pore density is constant, the size of the bubble hole is an important factor affecting the mechanical properties of the model. The smaller the size of the bubble hole, the less likely it is to produce stress concentration inside the model, and the stronger the resistance to material deformation. Under the random distribution, the lower the density of the polyurethane cured material, the higher the probability of damage between the adjacent bubbles, which is not conducive to the stability of the material. The density of the cured material should not be lower than 199 kg/m3.
