Human motion detection is getting considerable attention in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven healthcare systems. Human motion can be used to provide remote healthcare solutions for vulnerable people by identifying particular movements such as falls, gait and breathing disorders. This can allow people to live more independent lifestyles and still have the safety of being monitored if more direct care is needed. At present wearable devices can provide real-time monitoring by deploying equipment on a person’s body. However, putting devices on a person’s body all the time makes it uncomfortable and the elderly tend to forget to wear them, in addition to the insecurity of being tracked all the time. This paper demonstrates how human motions can be detected in a quasi-real-time scenario using a non-invasive method. Patterns in the wireless signals present particular human body motions as each movement induces a unique change in the wireless medium. These changes can be used to identify particular body motions. This work produces a dataset that contains patterns of radio wave signals obtained using software-defined radios (SDRs) to establish if a subject is standing up or sitting down as a test case. The dataset was used to create a machine learning model, which was used in a developed application to provide a quasi-real-time classification of standing or sitting state. The machine-learning model was able to achieve 96.70% accuracy using the Random Forest algorithm using 10 fold cross-validation. A benchmark dataset of wearable devices was compared to the proposed dataset and results showed the proposed dataset to have similar accuracy of nearly 90%. The machine-learning models developed in this paper are tested for two activities but the developed system is designed and applicable for detecting and differentiating x number of activities.

An Intelligent Non-Invasive Real-Time Human Activity Recognition System for Next-Generation Healthcare.

Smart health-care is undergoing rapid transformation from the conventional specialist and hospital-focused style to a distributed patient-focused manner. Several technological developments have encouraged this rapid revolution of health-care vertical. Currently, 4G and other communication standards are used in health-care for smart health-care services and applications. These technologies are crucial for the evolution of future smart health-care services. With the growth in the health-care industry, several applications are expected to produce a massive amount of data in different format and size. Such immense and diverse data needs special treatment concerning the end-to-end delay, bandwidth, latency and other attributes. It is difficult for current communication technologies to fulfil the requirements of highly dynamic and time-sensitive health care applications of the future. Therefore, the 5G networks are being designed and developed to tackle the diverse communication needs of health-care applications in Internet of Things (IoT). 5G assisted smart health-care networks are an amalgamation of IoT devices that require improved network performance and enhanced cellular coverage. Current connectivity solutions for IoT face challenges, such as the support for a massive number of devices, standardisation, energy-efficiency, device density, and security. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of 5G assisted smart health-care solutions in IoT. We present a structure for smart health-care in 5G by categorizing and classifying existing literature. We also present key requirements for successful deployment of smart health-care systems for certain scenarios in 5G. Finally, we discuss several open issues and research challenges in 5G smart health-care solutions in IoT.

Technologies Trend towards 5G Network for Smart Health-Care Using IoT: A Review

With the rapid increase of industrial systems, industrial spectrum is stepping into the era of big data, and at the same time spectrum resources are facing serious shortage. Cognitive industrial system (CIS) based on cognitive radio can improve spectrum utilization by accessing the idle spectrum licensed to primary user. However, the CIS must find enough idle channels by performing spectrum sensing. In this article, a reinforcement learning-based multislot double-threshold spectrum sensing with Bayesian fusion is proposed to sense industrial big spectrum data, which can find required idle channels faster while guaranteeing spectrum sensing performance. Double thresholds are set to guarantee both high detection probability and spectrum access probability, and weighed energy detection is proposed to maximize detection probability when the energy statistic falls into the confusion area between the double thresholds. Bayesian fusion is proposed to get a final decision on the channel availability by combining the local sensing decisions of all the time slots. A prediction and selection algorithm for idle channels is proposed to predict the idle probability of each channel and find required idle channels from the sorted channel set. From simulation results, the proposed spectrum sensing scheme outperforms cooperative spectrum sensing and energy detection, which can predict idle channels accurately and get needed idle channels with fewer sensing operations.

Reinforcement Learning-Based Multislot Double-Threshold Spectrum Sensing With Bayesian Fusion for Industrial Big Spectrum Data

Automatic modulation classification (AMC) is an essential technology for the non-cooperative communication systems, and it is widely applied into various communications scenarios. In the recent years, deep learning (DL) has been introduced into AMC due to its outstanding identification performance. However, it is almost impossible to implement previously proposed DL-based AMC algorithms without large number of labeled samples, while there are generally few labeled sample and large unlabel samples in the realistic communication scenarios. In this paper, we propose a transfer learning (TL)-based semi-supervised AMC (TL-AMC) in a zero-forcing aided multiple-input and multiple-output (ZF-MIMO) system. TL-AMC has a novel deep reconstruction and classification network (DRCN) structure that consists of convolutional auto-encoder (CAE) and convolutional neural network (CNN). Unlabeled samples flow from CAE for modulation signal reconstruction, while labeled samples are fed into CNN for AMC. Knowledge is transferred from the encoder layer of CAE to the feature layer of CNN by sharing their weights, in order to avoid the ineffective feature extraction of CNN under the limited labeled samples. Simulation results demonstrated the effectiveness of TL-AMC. In detail, TL-AMC performs better than CNN-based AMC under the limited samples. What’s more, when compared with CNN-based AMC trained on massive labeled samples, TL-AMC also achieved the similar classification accuracy at the relative high SNR regime.

Transfer Learning for Semi-Supervised Automatic Modulation Classification in ZF-MIMO Systems

In this article, a novel method for continuous hand gesture detection and recognition is proposed based on a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar. Firstly, we adopt the 2-Dimensional Fast Fourier Transform (2D-FFT) to estimate the range and Doppler parameters of the hand gesture raw data, and construct the range-time map (RTM) and Doppler-time map (DTM). Meanwhile, we apply the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithm to calculate the angle and construct the angle-time map (ATM). Secondly, a hand gesture detection method is proposed to segment the continuous hand gestures using a decision threshold. Thirdly, the central time-frequency trajectory of each hand gesture spectrogram is clustered using the k-means algorithm, and then the Fusion Dynamic Time Warping (FDTW) algorithm is presented to recognize the hand gestures. Finally, experiments show that the accuracy of the proposed hand gesture detection method can reach 96.17%. The hand gesture average recognition accuracy of the proposed FDTW algorithm is 95.83%, while its time complexity is reduced by more than 50%.

A Novel Detection and Recognition Method for Continuous Hand Gesture Using FMCW Radar

The development of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has been limited due to the shortage of spectrum resources. Based on cognitive radio, the cognitive IIoT (CIIoT) has been proposed to improve spectrum utilization via sensing and accessing the idle spectrum. To improve sensing and transmission performance of the CIIoT, a cluster-based CIIoT is proposed, in this article, wherein the cluster heads perform cooperative spectrum sensing to get available spectrum, and the nodes transmit via nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The frame structure of the CIIoT is designed, and the spectrum access probability and average total throughput of the CIIoT are deduced. A joint resource optimization for sensing time, node powers, and the number of clusters is formulated to maximize the average total throughput. The optimal solution is obtained via sensing and power optimization. The clustering algorithm and cluster head alternation are proposed to improve transmission performance and ensure energy balance, respectively. The simulations have indicated that the NOMA for the cluster-based CIIoT can better guarantee the transmission performance of each node, especially the node decoded first, than the traditional NOMA and orthogonal multiple access.
