Highly efficient and selective capture of heavy metals by poly(acrylic acid) grafted chitosan and biochar composite for wastewater treatment

Ion-specific effects on salting-in and salting-out of proteins, protein denaturation, as well as enzymatic activity are typically rationalized in terms of the Hofmeister series. Here, we demonstrate by means of NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations that the traditional explanation of the Hofmeister ordering of ions in terms of their bulk hydration properties is inadequate. Using triglycine as a model system, we show that the Hofmeister series for anions changes from a direct to a reversed series upon uncapping the N-terminus. Weakly hydrated anions, such as iodide and thiocyanate, interact with the peptide bond, while strongly hydrated anions like sulfate are repelled from it. In contrast, reversed order in interactions of anions is observed at the positively charged, uncapped N-terminus, and by analogy, this should also be the case at side chains of positively charged amino acids. These results demonstrate that the specific chemical and physical properties of peptides and proteins play a fundamental role in ion-specific effects. The present study thus provides a molecular rationalization of Hofmeister ordering for the anions. It also provides a route for tuning these interactions by titration or mutation of basic amino acid residues on the protein surface.

The properties of chitosan films can be modified by changing the solvent type, attributing to the different interaction patterns between chitosan and acids. However, little is known about how these interactions affect the structure and properties of chitosan films. In this work, the influence of acid type on the structure and properties of chitosan films was studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). FTIR spectra showed that the ionic interactions and hydrogen bonding could occur between chitosan and acid ions. Structural analysis revealed that chitosan was partially crystalline in hydrochloric and acetic acid films, whereas it was amorphous in lactic and citric acid films. DSC result indicated that the glass transition temperature of chitosan was much lower in citric acid film with low water content than in all the other films, suggesting that the citrate ions interacted more strongly with chitosan. A melting transition appeared in hydrochloric and acetic acid films. In addition, the tensile strength of these films decreased with an increase in the volume of acid. These observations indicate that the choice of a proper solvent for chitosan may be desirable for certain special applications.

Influence of salts in the Hofmeister series on the physical gelation behavior of gelatin in aqueous solutions

A simple yet effective soaking treatment has been proposed to fabricate hydrogels with desirable mechanical properties, but the strengthening mechanism of hydrogels lacks an in-depth study. Here, we investigated the influence of kosmotropic citrate anion on the structure and properties of immersed gelatin hydrogels. The obtained hydrogels possessed the properties of high strength, modulus and toughness simultaneously. The dehydration of hydrogels facilitated the interactions among gelatin molecules, resulting in the formation of helix structures. Both the content and length of the triple helices increase with an increase in citrate concentration, which in turn contributes to the strengthening of hydrogels. The excellent mechanical performances of these hydrogels may open up new applications for protein materials.
