Fog/edge computing has been proposed to be integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) to enable computing services devices deployed at network edge, aiming to improve the user’s experience and resilience of the services in case of failures. With the advantage of distributed architecture and close to end-users, fog/edge computing can provide faster response and greater quality of service for IoT applications. Thus, fog/edge computing-based IoT becomes future infrastructure on IoT development. To develop fog/edge computing-based IoT infrastructure, the architecture, enabling techniques, and issues related to IoT should be investigated first, and then the integration of fog/edge computing and IoT should be explored. To this end, this paper conducts a comprehensive overview of IoT with respect to system architecture, enabling technologies, security and privacy issues, and present the integration of fog/edge computing and IoT, and applications. Particularly, this paper first explores the relationship between cyber-physical systems and IoT, both of which play important roles in realizing an intelligent cyber-physical world. Then, existing architectures, enabling technologies, and security and privacy issues in IoT are presented to enhance the understanding of the state of the art IoT development. To investigate the fog/edge computing-based IoT, this paper also investigate the relationship between IoT and fog/edge computing, and discuss issues in fog/edge computing-based IoT. Finally, several applications, including the smart grid, smart transportation, and smart cities, are presented to demonstrate how fog/edge computing-based IoT to be implemented in real-world applications.

A Survey on Internet of Things: Architecture, Enabling Technologies, Security and Privacy, and Applications

Indoor localization has recently witnessed an increase in interest, due to the potential wide range of services it can provide by leveraging Internet of Things (IoT), and ubiquitous connectivity. Different techniques, wireless technologies and mechanisms have been proposed in the literature to provide indoor localization services in order to improve the services provided to the users. However, there is a lack of an up-to-date survey paper that incorporates some of the recently proposed accurate and reliable localization systems. In this paper, we aim to provide a detailed survey of different indoor localization techniques, such as angle of arrival (AoA), time of flight (ToF), return time of flight (RTOF), and received signal strength (RSS); based on technologies, such as WiFi, radio frequency identification device (RFID), ultra wideband (UWB), Bluetooth, and systems that have been proposed in the literature. This paper primarily discusses localization and positioning of human users and their devices. We highlight the strengths of the existing systems proposed in the literature. In contrast with the existing surveys, we also evaluate different systems from the perspective of energy efficiency, availability, cost, reception range, latency, scalability, and tracking accuracy. Rather than comparing the technologies or techniques, we compare the localization systems and summarize their working principle. We also discuss remaining challenges to accurate indoor localization.

The Internet of Things vision: Key features, applications and open issues

LoRa is a long-range, low-power, low-bitrate, wireless telecommunications system, promoted as an infrastructure solution for the Internet of Things: end-devices use LoRa across a single wireless hop to communicate to gateway(s), connected to the Internet and which act as transparent bridges and relay messages between these end-devices and a central network server. This paper provides an overview of LoRa and an in-depth analysis of its functional components. The physical and data link layer performance is evaluated by field tests and simulations. Based on the analysis and evaluations, some possible solutions for performance enhancements are proposed.

A Study of LoRa: Long Range & Low Power Networks for the Internet of Things

Certain data-communication protocols hog the spotlight, but all of them have a lot in common. Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach Featuring the Internet explains the engineering problems that are inherent in communicating digital information from point to point. The top-down approach mentioned in the subtitle means that the book starts at the top of the protocol stack--at the application layer--and works its way down through the other layers, until it reaches bare wire. The authors, for the most part, shun the well-known seven-layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol stack in favor of their own five-layer (application, transport, network, link, and physical) model. It's an effective approach that helps clear away some of the hand waving traditionally associated with the more obtuse layers in the OSI model. The approach is definitely theoretical--don't look here for instructions on configuring Windows 2000 or a Cisco router--but it's relevant to reality, and should help anyone who needs to understand networking as a programmer, system architect, or even administration guru.The treatment of the network layer, at which routing takes place, is typical of the overall style. Wireless sensor networks: A survey on the state of the art and the 802.15.4 and ZigBee standards

Next-generation cellular networks such as fifth-generation (5G) will experience tremendous growth in traffic. To accommodate such traffic demand, there is a necessity to increase the network capacity that eventually requires the deployment of more base stations (BSs). Nevertheless, BSs are very expensive and consume a significant amount of energy. Meanwhile, cloud radio access networks (C-RAN) has been proposed as an energy-efficient architecture that leverages cloud computing technology where baseband processing is performed in the cloud, i.e., the computing servers or baseband processing units (BBUs) are located in the cloud. With such an arrangement, more energy saving gains can be achieved by reducing the number of BBUs used. This paper proposes a bin packing scheme with three variants such as First-fit (FT), First-fit decreasing (FFD) and Next-fit (NF) for minimizing energy consumption in 5G C-RAN. The number of BBUs are reduced by matching the right amount of baseband computing load with traffic load. In the proposed scheme, BS traffic items that are mapped into processing requirements, are to be packed into computing servers, called bins, such that the number of bins used are minimized and idle servers can then be switched off to save energy. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed bin packing scheme achieves an enhanced energy performance compared to the existing distributed BS architecture.

Evaluating Energy-Efficient Cloud Radio Access Networks for 5G

This paper presents an extension for Broadband Satellite Multimedia (BSM) to support Mobility Management (MM). To support seamless handovers, mobility related entities are proposed in the Satellite Independent Access Function (SIAF) defined over the SI-SAP interface. This enables the mapping of the mobility related primitives between the higher layer and the satellite dependant lower layers via the Satellite Dependent Access Function (SDAF). The proposed MM architecture incorporates the Media Independent Handover Services defined in the IEEE802.21 to support handover between different satellite systems. This includes definition of the Media Independent Handover Function (MIHF) which provides interworking between heterogeneous 802 networks and between 802 and other terrestrial mobile networks through the support of three services for handover, namely, Media Independent Event Services (MIES), Media Independent Command Services (MICS) and Media Independent Information Services (MIIS). A detailed description of the function architecture and a case study showing the signalling interaction between MIH and SI-SAP primitves are presented.

The frequency response of the beam squint effects that are caused by the antenna array is described in the equivalent frequency-based model in terms of the array antenna gain. This is taken into account across a wide variety of uniform linear arrays (ULA) and uniform planer arrays (UPA) in a variety of sizes. The bandwidth of the signal spectrum is changed in order to examine the ways in which the array&apos;s frequency response shifts in response to changes in the incidence angle of the signal that is being received. Observation and research are being done on the compromise that must be made between the array&apos;s gain responsiveness and its bandwidth. Two equalisers, referred to respectively as zero-forcing (ZF) and minimal mean square error equalisers, are used in order to provide a remedy for the squinting effects brought on by the distortion brought on by the gain frequency response (MMSE). This paper includes the derivation of the array gain for an arbitrary array shape, which takes into account the tapering coefficients associated with the array antenna components. There are various tapering coefficients are used. A variety of instances, each dependent on the kind of tapering and equalisation, are provided, and the results are examined in relation to a variety of uncoded and coded modulations.
