Superplasticity—Recent advances and future directions

Rachinger grain boundary sliding is a characteristic of high temperature deformation in both creep when the grain size is large ( d > λ ) and superplasticity when the grain size is small ( d λ ), where d and λ are the grain size and the subgrain size, respectively. An analytical procedure is used to determine the rate equation for Rachinger sliding when d > λ . Data for superplastic metals are examined to give the rate equation for Rachinger sliding when d λ . A unified model is developed for Rachinger sliding at all grain sizes, where the rate of sliding is controlled by the rate of accomodation through intragranular slip. It is demonstrated that the predictions of this model are in good agreement with experimental data under both creep and superplastic conditions.

A unified approach to grain boundary sliding in creep and superplasticity

The relationship between stress and strain rate is often sigmoidal in superplastic materials, with a low strain rate sensitivity at low and high strain rates (regions I and III, respectively) and a high strain rate sensitivity at intermediate strain rates (region II) where the material exhibits optimal superplasticity This relationship is examined in detail, with reference both to the conflicting results reported for the Zn-22 pct Al eutectoid alloy and to the significance of the three regions of flow

The mechanical properties of superplastic materials

Grain rotation is a well-known phenomenon during high (homologous) temperature deformation and recrystallization of polycrystalline materials. In recent years, grain rotation has also been proposed as a plasticity mechanism at low temperatures (for example, room temperature for metals), especially for nanocrystalline grains with diameter d less than ~15 nm. Here, in tensile-loaded Pt thin films under a high-resolution transmission electron microscope, we show that the plasticity mechanism transitions from cross-grain dislocation glide in larger grains (d>6 nm) to a mode of coordinated rotation of multiple grains for grains with d<6 nm. The mechanism underlying the grain rotation is dislocation climb at the grain boundary, rather than grain boundary sliding or diffusional creep. Our atomic-scale images demonstrate directly that the evolution of the misorientation angle between neighbouring grains can be quantitatively accounted for by the change of the Frank–Bilby dislocation content in the grain boundary. Grain rotation is proposed as an active deformation mechanism in nanocrystalline metals at room temperature. Here, during in-situatomic scale experimentation, the authors observe that grains with a size <6 nm deform by coordinated rotation of multiple grains, associated with dislocation climb at grain boundaries.

Grain rotation mediated by grain boundary dislocations in nanocrystalline platinum

Grain boundary sliding is an important mode of deformation in superplasticity. Measurements of the contribution of sliding to the total strain generally give values of about 50–70% so that there is an apparent “missing strain” of about 30–50%. It is demonstrated that the experimental method used to measure the sliding contribution will lead to estimates in the range of about 45–90% even when all the deformation is by grain boundary sliding and the associated accommodation process. Since the problem of accommodation is less severe at the specimen surface, it is shown that estimates of the sliding contribution from surface marker lines will tend to lie at the lower end of this predicted range. It is concluded that grain boundary sliding accounts for essentially all the deformation under optimum superplastic conditions and there is no “missing strain” of about 30–50%.

An evaluation of the strain contributed by grain boundary sliding in superplasticity

The topological feature of the relative motion of grains during superplastic flow of an Al-9.3Zn-1.03Mg-0.22 wt.%Zr alloy has been examined by the translation of reference markers in the surface and interior of specimens. Microstructural evidence was obtained for grain-switching events based on the relative motion of a group of four grains. The translation of the grains seemed to occur by sliding and rotation. On the basis of the results of a texture study, accommodation strains required in this process are attributed predominantly to slip. Hence, the role played by slip in deformation at maximum strain-rate sensitivity is particularly significant for this alloy.
