Optical and structural properties of nanocrystalline copper oxide thin films prepared by activated reactive evaporation

We have investigated the annealing effect on the structural, optical and electrical properties of copper oxide films prepared on glass substrates by chemical deposition. The films were annealed in air for different temperatures ranging from 200 to 350 °C. X-ray diffraction patterns showed that the films as-deposited and annealed at 200 and 250 °C are of cuprite structure with composition Cu2O. Annealing at 300 °C converts these films to CuO. This conversion is accompanied by a shift in the optical band gap from 2.20 eV to 1.35 eV. Also this conversion was obtained by the dc electrical conductivity and FTIR spectroscopy measurements.

Controlled growth and characteristics of single-phase Cu2O and CuO films by pulsed laser deposition

Flexible, transparent, and conductive electrodes are prepared by reduction of the graphene oxide (GO) films which were spin-coated on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrates. On the reduced graphene oxide (rGO) films, ZnO nanorods, as well as p-type and n-type Cu2O films with good crystallinity have been electrochemically deposited and then characterized. Meanwhile, the effect of pH value of the deposition bath on the morphology, structure, and semiconducting property of the electrochemical deposited Cu2O has been studied. Our results provide a possible way to replace the indium tin oxide (ITO) and fluorine tin oxide (FTO) electrodes with rGO films in the electrochemical synthesis, and make it promising to synthesize semiconductor oxides on rGO films for future flexible photovoltaic applications.

Electrochemical Deposition of Semiconductor Oxides on Reduced Graphene Oxide-Based Flexible, Transparent, and Conductive Electrodes

Self-assembly (SA) of long-chain alkanethiols on copper was studied. Two factors were found to have substantial influence on the SA process:  (i) the chemical reactivity of Cu toward substances present in the adsorption solution, particularly the solvent, and (ii) surface pretreatment, which influences the amount of oxide and the surface morphology. Both factors are less important in the case of SA onto gold because of its chemical inertness. Monolayers of octadecanethiol (C18SH) were adsorbed from different solvents (ethanol, toluene, and bicyclohexyl) at various thiol concentrations onto Cu surfaces pretreated in several different ways. The monolayers were characterized by contact-angle measurements, grazing-incidence Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning force microscopy. The oxidation of sputtering deposited copper thin films has been investigated. Phase identification and surface morphology characterization were performed by x‐ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The copper film is first oxidized to Cu2O below 300 °C and then to CuO at higher temperatures (≥300 °C) near the surface of the copper. AFM results show that the as‐deposited Cu film contains grains of similar sizes. After heat treatment at 200 °C, small grains are observed due to nucleation of the Cu2O phase. Further annealing in air leads to aggregation and growth of the grains whereas the grain boundary of the grains before coalescence is still evident. The Cu2O and CuO phases form alternating layers when the annealing temperature is 400 °C.
