This paper discusses the evolution of longitudinal train dynamics (LTD) simulations, which covers numerical solvers, vehicle connection systems, air brake systems, wagon dumper systems and locomotives, resistance forces and gravitational components, vehicle in-train instabilities, and computing schemes. A number of potential research topics are suggested, such as modelling of friction, polymer, and transition characteristics for vehicle connection simulations, studies of wagon dumping operations, proper modelling of vehicle in-train instabilities, and computing schemes for LTD simulations. Health monitoring systems with low-cost sensor networks and smart algorithms are always needed in both passenger trains and heavy haul trains due to the increasing need for reliability and safety in the railway industry. An overview: modern techniques for railway vehicle on-board health monitoring systems

Given the constant demand for heavier, longer, faster, and more efficient rail freight vehicles, onboard fault detection systems appear as a good approach for enhanced railway asset exploitation. Real-time condition monitoring reduces inefficient preventive and reactive maintenance actions, decreases waste from replacing parts that still have a useful life, and improves availability and safety by real-time rolling stock diagnosis. There have been considerable advances in wayside monitoring applications, but these cannot achieve real-time continuous monitoring. With the price reduction and miniaturization trends of electronic devices, the cost of deploying wireless sensor networks onboard freight trains continues to become more feasible and accessible. On the other hand, the lack of onboard electric power availability on freight wagons appears as the major limitation for the implementation of these technologies. This paper reviews recent onboard condition monitoring sensors, systems, methods and techniques, aiming to define the present state of the art and its potential application for freight wagons without onboard electric power.

Onboard Condition Monitoring Sensors, Systems and Techniques for Freight Railway Vehicles: A Review

Longer and heavier trains mean larger in-train forces and more complicated force patterns. Practical experience indicates that the development of fatigue failure of coupling systems in long heavy trains may differ from conventional understanding. The friction-type draft gears are the most widely used draft gears. The ever developing heavy haul transport environment requires further or new understanding of friction draft gear behaviour and its implications for train dynamics as well as fatigue damage of rolling stock. However, modelling of friction draft gears is a highly nonlinear question. Especially the poor predictability, repeatability and the discontinuity of friction make this task more challenging. This article reviews current techniques in dynamics modelling of friction draft gears to provide a starting point that can be used to improve existing or develop new models to achieve more accurate force amplitude and pattern predictions.

A review of dynamics modelling of friction draft gear

The paper presents an analysis of heavy freight train dynamics carried out both from a numerical and experimental point of view. A numerical procedure has been developed to investigate the dynamics of heavy freight trains; the proposed methodology combines a new numerical model designed for the longitudinal dynamics of the whole trainset called TSDyn (TrainSet Dynamics simulator) with a multi-body code named MoNSTram (Modular Non-Stationary TRAMcar dynamics simulator) originally developed to analyse the dynamics of modular tramcars and used for a more detailed investigation of the response of a trainset segment. On-line tests have been carried out aiming at acquiring data both for the validation of the simulation code and for the characterisation of buffers’ response. A numerical analysis is eventually presented to show the effect of trainset composition on running safety.

Numerical and experimental approach for the evaluation of severe longitudinal dynamics of heavy freight trains

Parallel Co-Simulation Method for Railway Vehicle-Track Dynamics

Computer simulations are utilised to study the energy used by heavy haul trains and the amount of energy that can be generated from dynamic braking of these trains; these studies allow the potential for the application of hybrid locomotives to be evaluated. An in-house written software package is used to perform simulations on the energy balance between energy usage and the energy generated from dynamic braking for heavy haul operations on two typical track routes in Australia. The simulation results show that the energy generated from dynamic braking can contribute up to 30% of the energy used in locomotive traction. Detailed analyses show that the locomotives can operate at an average power that is much less than full power, and an energy hybridisation potential factor is defined, with the maximum factor reaching a value of 63%. This factor indicates the considerable potential for using hybrid locomotive traction in heavy haul applications.

Longitudinal heavy haul train simulations and energy analysis for typical Australian track routes

Interest in hydrogen-powered rail vehicles has gradually increased worldwide over recent decades due to the global pressure on reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, technology availability, and multiple options of power supply. In the past, research and development have been primarily focusing on light rail and regional trains, but the interest in hydrogen-powered freight and heavy haul trains is also growing. The review shows that some technical feasibility has been demonstrated from the research and experiments on proof-of-concept designs. Several rail vehicles powered by hydrogen either are currently operating or are the subject of experimental programmes. The paper identifies that fuel cell technology is well developed and has obvious application in providing electrical traction power, while hydrogen combustion in traditional IC engines and gas turbines is not yet well developed. The need for on-board energy storage is discussed along with the benefits of energy management and control systems.

Comparison of locomotive energy storage systems for heavy-haul operation

Wedge suspensions are critical systems for three-piece bogies. This paper proposes a methodology to optimize wedge suspensions using white-box suspension models, dynamic simulations of railway vehicle systems, parallel multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (pMOPSO), and parallel multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (pMOGA). Two types of original wedge suspensions with three different toe angle configurations were modeled and compared. Four case studies were carried out to prove the feasibility of the optimization methodology. A series of optimized designs were identified using the Pareto Front technique. Demonstrative optimized designs were compared with the original designs. Results show that wedge suspensions with the toe-in configuration provide better dynamic performance for freight wagons. Significant reductions to the maximum wheel/rail contact forces can be achieved by the optimized designs. Linear speed-up was achieved by using the parallel computing technique.
