Cobalt single atom anchored on N-doped carbon nanoboxes as typical single-atom catalysts (SACs) for boosting the overall water splitting

Herein, the synthesis of low-cost, non-toxic and recyclable protonated chitosan-zeolite hybrid metal-free catalysts was carried out. The metal-free hybrid catalysts were used for the first time for efficient H2 production from NaBH4 methanolysis and ethylene glycolysis. The prepared chitosan-zeolite-H composite was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-Ray analyser (EDS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The different chitosan/zeolite ratios and different calcination temperatures, the effect of temperature and NaBH4 amount and reusability parameters were investigated. Also, the possible mechanism of H2 formation in methanol and ethylene glycol with chitosan-zeolite-H is discussed. HGR values of NaBH4 (0.25 g) methanolysis and ethylene glycolysis were 17,500 and 10,428 ml min−1g−1, respectively. Ea values obtained for the NaBH4 methanolysis and ethylene glycolysis were found to be 37.29 kJ mol−1 and 50.00 kJ mol−1, respectively.

N-ethylcarbazole (NEC) has been considered one of the most prospective liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) for hydrogen storage. However, designing single catalyst capable of driving both hydrogenation of NEC and dehydrogenation of dodecahydro-NEC (12H-NEC) is of a big challenge. Herein, we develop an atomic-dispersion of Rh with the Co nanoparticles (NPs) to form a Rh1Co structure maximizing the Rh utilization, which boosts the reversible (de)hydrogenation of NEC, and enables multiple cycles of reversible hydrogen uptake and release. Significantly, a low temperature of 90 oC is realized for the complete hydrogenation (100%), representing one of the lowest temperatures yet reported for the total hydrogenation of NEC. The remarkable catalytic performance of Rh1Co catalysts is the result of the optimal electronic structure between atomic-dispersion of Rh and Co NPs confirmed by structural characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which allowed fast interfacial electron transfer to intermediates. 

Single Rh1Co Catalyst Enabling Reversible Hydrogenation and Dehydrogenation of N-ethylcarbazole for Hydrogen Storage

Liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) are promising hydrogen carriers that play an important role in the hydrogen economy. However, designing an efficient catalyst for realizing hydrogen storage with cost-effective and low-temperature is still a great challenge. Herein, we report a Ru single-atoms supported on *BEA zeolite catalyst (Ru(Na)/Beta), with the assistance of hydrogen spillover, which can remarkably enhance the hydrogenation of N-ethylcarbazole(NEC), N-propylcarbazole(NPC) and 2-methylindole (2-MID) at lower temperatures with lower Ru content (0.5 wt%). Notably, the obtained Ru(Na)/Beta catalyst exhibits excellent activity in the hydrogenation of NEC with the hydrogen uptake of 5.69 wt% and a conversion rate of > 99% within 1.5 h for the 6 MPa H2 at 100 °C, whereas the hydrogen uptake on traditional Ru/Al2O3 is only 2.97 wt% with the conversion rate of 67 % under the same conditions. It is found that highly dispersed Ru single-atoms boost hydrogen activation and the strong acid sites (Brønsted and Lewis) of zeolites promote the hydrogen spillover on the hydrogenation with N-heterocycles. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Ru single atoms and *BEA zeolite is crucial for accelerating the hydrogenation rate and lowering the activation energy (45.7 vs. 88.3 kJ/mol) compared with traditional Ru-based catalysts.
