The past couple of years have witnessed a remarkable burst in the development of organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), with a number of organic semiconductors surpassing the benchmark mobility of 10 cm2/(V s). In this perspective, we highlight some of the major milestones along the way to provide a historical view of OFET development, introduce the integrated molecular design concepts and process engineering approaches that lead to the current success, and identify the challenges ahead to make OFETs applicable in real applications.

Integrated materials design of organic semiconductors for field-effect transistors

Non-Hermitian systems exhibit striking exceptions from the paradigmatic bulk-boundary correspondence, including the failure of bulk Bloch band invariants in predicting boundary states and the (dis)appearance of boundary states at parameter values far from those corresponding to gap closings in periodic systems without boundaries. Here, we provide a comprehensive framework to unravel this disparity based on the notion of biorthogonal quantum mechanics: While the properties of the left and right eigenstates corresponding to boundary modes are individually decoupled from the bulk physics in non-Hermitian systems, their combined biorthogonal density penetrates the bulk precisely when phase transitions occur. This leads to generalized bulk-boundary correspondence and a quantized biorthogonal polarization that is formulated directly in systems with open boundaries. We illustrate our general insights by deriving the phase diagram for several microscopic open boundary models, including exactly solvable non-Hermitian extensions of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and Chern insulators.

Biorthogonal Bulk-Boundary Correspondence in Non-Hermitian Systems.

A possible sighting of Majorana states Nearly 80 years ago, the Italian physicist Ettore Majorana proposed the existence of an unusual type of particle that is its own antiparticle, the so-called Majorana fermion. The search for a free Majorana fermion has so far been unsuccessful, but bound Majorana-like collective excitations may exist in certain exotic superconductors. Nadj-Perge et al. created such a topological superconductor by depositing iron atoms onto the surface of superconducting lead, forming atomic chains (see the Perspective by Lee). They then used a scanning tunneling microscope to observe enhanced conductance at the ends of these chains at zero energy, where theory predicts Majorana states should appear. Science, this issue p. 602; see also p. 547 Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to observe signatures of Majorana states at the ends of iron atom chains. [Also see Perspective by Lee] Majorana fermions are predicted to localize at the edge of a topological superconductor, a state of matter that can form when a ferromagnetic system is placed in proximity to a conventional superconductor with strong spin-orbit interaction. With the goal of realizing a one-dimensional topological superconductor, we have fabricated ferromagnetic iron (Fe) atomic chains on the surface of superconducting lead (Pb). Using high-resolution spectroscopic imaging techniques, we show that the onset of superconductivity, which gaps the electronic density of states in the bulk of the Fe chains, is accompanied by the appearance of zero-energy end-states. This spatially resolved signature provides strong evidence, corroborated by other observations, for the formation of a topological phase and edge-bound Majorana fermions in our atomic chains.

Observation of Majorana fermions in ferromagnetic atomic chains on a superconductor

strong whereas at smaller interactions only a single solution is found. The additional solutions at larger electron-phonon couplings correspond to symmetry-broken states with inhomogeneous electron densities. A comparison to exact results indicates that this symmetry breaking is strongly correlated with the formation of a bipolaron state in which the two electrons prefer to reside on the same molecule. The results further show that the Hartree and partially self-consistent Born solutions obtained by enforcing symmetry do not compare well with exact energetics, while the fully self-consistent Born approximation gives qualitatively correct behavior in the same symmetric case. This together with a presented natural occupation number analysis supports the conclusion that the fully self-consistent approximation does describe a bipolaron.

Holstein dimer in many-body perturbation theory I: from polarons to bipolarons by symmetry-breaking

Based on quantum reactive-scattering theory, we propose a method for studying the electronic nonadiabaticity in collision processes involving electron-ion rearrangements. We investigate the state-to-state transition probability for electron-ion rearrangements with two comparable approaches. In the first approach the information of the electron is only contained in the ground-state Born-Oppenheimer potential-energy surface, which is the starting point of common reactive-scattering calculations. In the second approach, the electron is explicitly taken into account and included in the calculations at the same level as the ions. Hence, the deviation in the results between the two approaches directly reflects the electronic nonadiabaticity during the collision process. To illustrate the method, we apply it to the well-known proton-transfer model of Shin and Metiu (one electron and three ions), generalized by us in order to allow for reactive scattering channels. It is shown that our explicit electron approach is able to capture electronic nonadiabaticity and the renormalization of the reaction barrier near the classical turning points of the potential in nuclear configuration space. In contrast, system properties near the equilibrium geometry of the asymptotic scattering channels are hardly affected by electronic nonadiabatic effects. We also present an analytical expression for the transition amplitude of the asymmetric proton-transfer model based on the direct evaluation of integrals over the involved Airy functions.

A quantum reactive scattering perspective on electronic nonadiabaticity

We consider nontrivial topological phases in Floquet systems using unitary loops and stroboscopic evolutions under a static Floquet Hamiltonian $H_F$ in the presence of dynamical space-time symmetries $G$. While the latter has been subject of out-of-equilibrium classifications that extend the ten-fold way and systems with additional crystalline symmetries to periodically driven systems, we explore the anomalous topological zero modes that arise in $H_F$ from the coexistence of a dynamical space-time symmetry $M$ and antisymmetry $A$ of $G$, and classify them using a frequency-domain formulation. Moreover, we provide an interpretation of the resulting Floquet topological phases using a frequency lattice with a decoration represented by color degrees of freedom on the lattice vertices. These colors correspond to the coefficient $N$ of the group extension $\tilde{G}$ of $G$ along the frequency lattice, given by $N=Z\rtimes H^1[A,M]$. The distinct topological classifications that arise at different energy gaps in its quasi-energy spectrum are described by the torsion product of the cohomology group $H^{2}[G,N]$ classifying the group extension.

Distinct Floquet topological classifications from color-decorated frequency lattices with space-time symmetries

A striking signature of 2D topological insulators (TIs) and 3D Second Order TIs are 1D helical modes at sample edges or hinges, i.e. modes in which the propagation and spin directions are locked, conferring robustness to transport through these modes. Injecting pairs from superconducting contacts into such helical modes is thus different from pair injection into nontopological, spin-degenerate modes: Cooper pairs of both helicities must now separate according to the mode helicity, leading to two families of helical Andreev hinge modes, one on each hinge. To explore this physics, we have measured and analyzed the statistics of the switching current of a bismuth nanoring connected to two superconducting leads, over a wide range of magnetic fields. The average switching current displays a 2-pi-periodic sawtooth-like current-phase relation (CPR), confirming the long, ballistic nature of transport previously reported in Josephson junctions containing a single bismuth nanowire, and consistent with supercurrent carried by protected 1D helical hinge modes, characteristic of 3D Second Order Topological Insulators. The switching current histograms display an unexpected additional branch that is shifted by pi with respect to the first one. Using a phenomenological model of two helical Andreev hinge modes, we deduce the relative occupation of their ground and excited states, and extract the relaxation times for both a single quasiparticle and a pair of quasiparticles. We find that both times are remarkably long, of the order of milliseconds. Moreover, the ratio of the quasiparticle over the pair relaxation time, about 5, is exceptionally low compared to nontopological systems, which we attribute to the spatial separation of the helical hinge modes. Our results provide new insights into quasiparticle and Cooper-pair relaxation processes in hinge modes of Second Order Topological Insulators.
