In most countries, sanitary landfill is nowadays the most common way to eliminate municipal solid wastes (MSWs) However, sanitary landfill generates large quantity of heavily polluted leachate, which can induce ecological risk and potential hazards towards public health and ecosystems The application of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) including ozone-based oxidation, Fenton oxidation, electrochemical oxidation, and other AOPs to treatment of landfill leachate was reviewed The treatment efficiency in term of chemical oxygen demand (COD) of various AOPs was presented Advantages and drawbacks of various AOPs were discussed Among the AOPs reviewed, Fenton process should be the best choice, not only because it can achieve about 49~89% of COD removal with COD ranging from 837 to 8894 mg/L, but also because the process is cost-effective and simple in technological aspect, there is no mass transfer limitation (homogeneous nature) and both iron and hydrogen peroxide are nontoxic

Ammonia removal in anaerobic digestion by biogas stripping: an evaluation of process alternatives using a first order rate model based on experimental findings

The increased global consumption of chicken products has resulted in the generation of huge amounts of manure Numerous studies emphasized the large potential of this waste as an untapped source of renewable energy through anaerobic digestion (AD) However, intrinsic difficulties, in particular the high N content, induce instable process conditions, including the accumulation of intermediates, and foaming, which reduces methane yields Such issues limit the widespread application of this energy-rich substrate for biogas production The process inhibition by ammonia is usually prevented by reducing the concentration of chicken manure through dilution or by operating the plant considerably below its theoretical reactor capacity However, this process compromises process efficiency, thereby increasing capital investments and operational costs Another option to achieve optimal process performance is co-digestion with less N-rich materials However, co-digestion also has its limitations due to the frequent unavailability of sufficient amounts of C-rich substrates A series of promising technical solutions have been developed to overcome the aforementioned bottlenecks Examples include stripping or membrane extraction as means to reduce ammonia concentration in the fermenter Several full-scale plants employing ammonia removal techniques have been installed recently Latest research also investigated the use of additives, such as zeolites and trace elements, as well as bioaugmentation, to mitigate ammonia inhibition The current study reviews the state of technology as well as recent achievements and perspectives It provides an overview of the different approaches to remove ammonia from AD-process and presents practical examples from China and Europe

Comparison of enhancement of pentachlorophenol sonolysis at 20 kHz by dual-frequency sonication.

Pentachlorophenol sonolysis by different frequency ultrasound combination were investigated at five different frequencies over the range from 20 kHz to 1040 kHz. Pentachlorophenol degradation rate by sole-frequency ultrasound firstly increases along with frequency, and then decreases as the frequency arrives at some degree, pentachlorophenol degradation by sole frequency ultrasound shows obvious frequency effect. Pentachlorophenol degradation efficiency by dual frequency ultrasound is the highest compared to that by sole frequency ultrasound, so the combination of dual frequency systems has synergistic effect. The order of contribution to the enhancement effect of sonochemical degradation of pentachlorophenol at 20 kHz is as follows: 530 kHz > 800 kHz > 40 kHz > 1040 kHz.
