The high cost of low temperature fuel cells is to a large part dictated by the high loading of Pt required to catalyse the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Arguably the most viable route to decrease the Pt loading, and to hence commercialise these devices, is to improve the ORR activity of Pt by alloying it with other metals. In this perspective paper we provide an overview of the fundamentals underlying the reduction of oxygen on platinum and its alloys. We also report the ORR activity of Pt5La for the first time, which shows a 3.5- to 4.5-fold improvement in activity over Pt in the range 0.9 to 0.87 V, respectively. We employ angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations to understand the activity of Pt5La.

Understanding the electrocatalysis of oxygen reduction on platinum and its alloys

Advancement in heterogeneous catalysis relies on the capability of altering material structures at the nanoscale, and that is particularly important for the development of highly active electrocatalysts with uncompromised durability. Here, we report the design and synthesis of a Pt-bimetallic catalyst with multilayered Pt-skin surface, which shows superior electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This novel structure was first established on thin film extended surfaces with tailored composition profiles and then implemented in nanocatalysts by organic solution synthesis. Electrochemical studies for the ORR demonstrated that after prolonged exposure to reaction conditions, the Pt-bimetallic catalyst with multilayered Pt-skin surface exhibited an improvement factor of more than 1 order of magnitude in activity versus conventional Pt catalysts. Design and Synthesis of Bimetallic Electrocatalyst with Multilayered Pt-Skin Surfaces

Probing liquid/solid interfaces at the molecular level.

During the last decades, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has become an indispensable method for probing the structure and composition of heterogeneous catalysts, revealing the nature of the active sites and establishing links between structural motifs in a catalyst, local electronic structure, and catalytic properties. Here we discuss the fundamental principles of the XAS method and describe the progress in the instrumentation and data analysis approaches undertaken for deciphering X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra. Recent usages of XAS in the field of heterogeneous catalysis, with emphasis on examples concerning electrocatalysis, will be presented. The latter is a rapidly developing field with immense industrial applications but also unique challenges in terms of the experimental characterization restrictions and advanced modeling approaches required. This review will highlight the new insight that can be gained with XAS on complex real-world electrocatalysts including their working mechanisms and the dynamic processes taking place in the course of a chemical reaction. More specifically, we will discuss applications of in situ and operando XAS to probe the catalyst’s interactions with the environment (support, electrolyte, ligands, adsorbates, reaction products, and intermediates) and its structural, chemical, and electronic transformations as it adapts to the reaction conditions.

In Situ/Operando Electrocatalyst Characterization by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The rotating disk electrode (RDE) technique is being extensively used as a screening tool to estimate the activity of novel PEMFC electrocatalysts synthesized in lab-scale (mg) quantities. Discrepancies in measured activity attributable to glassware and electrolyte impurity levels, as well as conditioning, protocols and corrections are prevalent in the literature. Moreover, the electrochemical response to a broad spectrum of commercially sourced perchloric acid and the effect of acid molarity on impurity levels and solution resistance were also assessed. Our findings reveal that an area specific activity (SA) exceeding 2.0 mA/cm2 (20 mV/s, 25°C, 100 kPa, 0.1 M HClO4) for polished poly-Pt is an indicator of impurity levels that do not impede the accurate measurement of the ORR activity of Pt based catalysts. After exploring various conditioning protocols to approach maximum utilization of the electrochemical area (ECA) and peak ORR activity without introducing catalyst degradation, an investigation of measurement protocols for ECA and ORR activity was conducted. Down-selected protocols were based on the criteria of reproducibility, duration of experiments, impurity effects and magnitude of pseudo-capacitive background correction. In sum, statistical reproducibility of ORR activity for poly-Pt and Pt supported on high surface area carbon was demonstrated.

Oxygen Reduction Reaction Measurements on Platinum Electrocatalysts Utilizing Rotating Disk Electrode Technique I. Impact of Impurities, Measurement Protocols and Applied Corrections

The electrochemical oxidation behaviors of the surfaces of platinum nanoparticles, one of the key phenomena in fuel cell developments, were investigated in situ and in real time, via time-resolved hard X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Combining two complementary structural analyses, dynamical and inhomogenous structural changes occurring at the surfaces of nanoparticles were monitored on an atomic level with a time resolution of less than 1 s. After oxidation at 1.4 V vs RHE (reversible hydrogen electrode) in a 0.5 M H(2)SO(4) solution, longer Pt-O bonds (2.2-2.3 A that can be assigned to OHH and/or OH species) were first formed on the surface through the partial oxidation of water molecules. Next, these species turned to shorter Pt-O bonds (2.0 A, adsorbed atomic oxygen), and atomic oxygen was incorporated into the inner part of the nanoparticles, forming an initial monolayer oxide that had alpha-PtO(2)-like local structures with expanded Pt-Pt bonds (3.1 A). Finally, quasi-three-dimensional oxides with longer Pt-(O)-Pt bonds (3.5 A, precursor for beta-PtO(2)) grew on the surface, at almost 100 s after oxidation. Despite the very complex oxidation mechanism on the atomic level, XANES analysis indicated that the charge transfer from platinum to the adsorbed oxygen species was almost constant and rather small, that is, about 0.5 electrons per oxygen, up to two monolayers of oxygen. This means that ionic polarization hardly develops at this stage of the surface platinum's "oxide" growth.
