Organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs) have lived to see great improvements in recent years. This review presents new insight into conduction mechanisms and performance characteristics, as well as opportunities for modeling properties of OTFTs. The shifted focus in research from novel chemical structures to fabrication technologies that optimize morphology and structural order is underscored by chapters on vacuum-deposited and solution-processed organic semiconducting films. Finally, progress in the growing field of the n-type OTFTs is discussed in ample detail. The Figure, showing a pentacene film edge on SiO2, illustrates the morphology issue.

Organic Thin Film Transistors for Large Area Electronics

Self-organization in many solution-processed, semiconducting conjugated polymers results in complex microstructures, in which ordered microcrystalline domains are embedded in an amorphous matrix1. This has important consequences for electrical properties of these materials: charge transport is usually limited by the most difficult hopping processes and is therefore dominated by the disordered matrix, resulting in low charge-carrier mobilities2 (⩽10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1). Here we use thin-film, field-effect transistor structures to probe the transport properties of the ordered microcrystalline domains in the conjugated polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene), P3HT. Self-organization in P3HT results in a lamella structure with two-dimensional conjugated sheets formed by interchain stacking. We find that, depending on processing conditions, the lamellae can adopt two different orientations—parallel and normal to the substrate—the mobilities of which differ by more than a factor of 100, and can reach values as high as 0.1 cm2 V-1 s-1 (refs 3, 4). Optical spectroscopy of the field-induced charge, combined with the mobility anisotropy, reveals the two-dimensional interchain character of the polaronic charge carriers, which exhibit lower relaxation energies than the corresponding radical cations on isolated one-dimensional chains. The possibility of achieving high mobilities via two-dimensional transport in self-organized conjugated lamellae is important for applications of polymer transistors in logic circuits5 and active-matrix displays4,6.

Two-dimensional charge transport in self-organized, high-mobility conjugated polymers

Recent advances in mechanics and materials provide routes to integrated circuits that can offer the electrical properties of conventional, rigid wafer-based technologies but with the ability to be stretched, compressed, twisted, bent, and deformed into arbitrary shapes. Inorganic and organic electronic materials in microstructured and nanostructured forms, intimately integrated with elastomeric substrates, offer particularly attractive characteristics, with realistic pathways to sophisticated embodiments. Here, we review these strategies and describe applications of them in systems ranging from electronic eyeball cameras to deformable light-emitting displays. We conclude with some perspectives on routes to commercialization, new device opportunities, and remaining challenges for research.

Materials and mechanics for stretchable electronics

Direct printing of functional electronic materials may provide a new route to low-cost fabrication of integrated circuits. However, to be useful it must allow continuous manufacturing of all circuit components by successive solution deposition and printing steps in the same environment. We demonstrate direct inkjet printing of complete transistor circuits, including via-hole interconnections based on solution-processed polymer conductors, insulators, and self-organizing semiconductors. We show that the use of substrate surface energy patterning to direct the flow of water-based conducting polymer inkjet droplets enables high-resolution definition of practical channel lengths of 5 micrometers. High mobilities of 0.02 square centimeters per volt second and on-off current switching ratios of 10 5 were achieved.

High-Resolution Inkjet Printing of All-Polymer Transistor Circuits

The optoelectronic properties of polymeric semiconductor materials can be utilized for the fabrication of organic electronic and photonic devices. When key structural requirements are met, these materials exhibit unique properties such as solution processability, large charge transporting capabilities, and/or broad optical absorption. In this review recent developments in the area of π-conjugated polymeric semiconductors for organic thin-film (or field-effect) transistors (OTFTs or OFETs) and bulk-heterojunction photovoltaic (or solar) cell (BHJ-OPV or OSC) applications are summarized and analyzed.

π-Conjugated Polymers for Organic Electronics and Photovoltaic Cell Applications†

A printed field-effect transistor (FET) is reported, in which all the essential components are screen-printed for the first time. This transistor has a polyimide dielectric layer, a regioregular poly(3-alkythiophene) semiconducting layer, and two silver electrodes, all of which are printed on an ITO-coated plastic substrate.

High-performance plastic transistors fabricated by printing techniques

The fabrication and characteristics of organic smart pixels are described. The smart pixel reported in this letter consists of a single organic thin-film field effect transistor (FET) monolithically integrated with an organic light-emitting diode. The FET active material is a regioregular polythiophene. The maximum optical power emitted by the smart pixel is about 300 nW/cm2 corresponding to a luminance of ∼2300 cd/m2.

Organic smart pixels

A process for fabricating thin film transistors in which the active layer is an organic semiconducting material with a carrier mobility greater than 10-3 cm2 /Vs and a conductivity less than about 10-6 S/cm at 20° C. is disclosed. The organic semiconducting material is a regioregular (3-alkylthiophene) polymer. The organic semiconducting films are formed by applying a solution of the regioregular polymer and a solvent over the substrate. The poly (3-alkylthiophene) films have a preferred orientation in which the thiophene chains has a planar stacking so the polymer backbone is generally parallel to the substrate surface.

Method of making an organic thin film transistor

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form an organic semiconductor layer by forming an active layer of organic material and permitting the layer to have a carrier mobility of a specific value or higher and a conductivity of a specific value or lower. SOLUTION: An active semiconductor layer is formed of organic polymer having a carrier mobility of approximately 10 cm /Vs or higher and a conductivity of approximately 10 s/cm or lower. An organic material active layer is composed of regioregular homopolymer (3-alkylthiophene). The alkyl group has at least 2-12 carbon atoms and is represented by a character R. Branched chains, such as isopropyl and isobutyl, and straight chain alkyl are the examples of the alkyl group. In the regioregular homopolymer of the 3-alkylthiophene monomer, the orientation of the alkl group of the thiophene part is regular in regard to the thiophene part which adjoins the polymer chain.
