Photonic chip based transmitter optimization and receiver demultiplexing of a 1.28 Tbit/s OTDM signal

An optical format conversion scheme of multilevel phase-shift keying (M-ary PSK) signals using the four-wave mixing based optical phase erasure is discussed in this paper. The conversion from differential quadrature phase-shift keying (DQPSK) to differential phase shift keying at 10 and 160 Gbaud, and the conversion from differential eight-ary phase-shift keying to DQPSK at 40 Gbaud have been experimentally demonstrated. The proposed scheme could be used as a phase erasure, in which a redundant tributary of the M-ary PSK signal is removed, or as an “updater” where the unwanted phase pattern is replaced with the new pattern.

Format Conversion of Optical Multilevel Signals Using FWM-Based Optical Phase Erasure

We propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-optical phase multiplexing scheme using four-wave mixing in a highly nonlinear fiber. Two 10-Gb/s pi/2-shifted return-to-zero (RZ) differential phase-shift-keying (DPSK) wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) signals are successfully phase-multiplexed into a 20-Gb/s RZ differential quadrature phase-shift-keying signal with a negative 1.6-dB power penalty. With more input DPSK WDM signals, the proposed scheme can be applied to obtain a multilevel phase-shift-keying signal with increased capacity and enhanced spectral efficiency.

All-Optical RZ-DPSK WDM to RZ-DQPSK Phase Multiplexing Using Four-Wave Mixing in Highly Nonlinear Fiber

We demonstrate optical multiplexing of two 21.5 Gb/s DPSK signals into a single 43 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK channel with simultaneous 7-fold multicasting of the multiplexed 43 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK signal in a single periodically-poled lithium-niobate waveguide. We also demonstrate direct 7-fold multicasting of a single 43 Gb/s RZ-DQPSK signal and give a comparison of the two schemes. A bit error rate of 10−9 with power penalties ≪ 5 dB was obtained for all multicasted RZ-DQPSK signals with 100 GHz channel spacing.

Optical multiplexing of two 21.5 Gb/s DPSK signals into a single 43 Gb/s DQPSK channel with simultaneous 7-fold multicasting in a single PPLN waveguide

A novel scheme is proposed to achieve self-pumping wavelength conversion for two differential phase-shift keying (DPSK) signals at different wavelengths through four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a highly nonlinear optical fiber. By changing the phase modulation depths to pi/2 for both of the DPSK signals, the two signals can be multiplexed to generate a differential quadrature phase-shift keying signal. The simulations and experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of phase manipulations for phase-shift keying signals through the FWM process
