A review on the mechanics of nanostructures

Nonlinear energy sink (NES) is an appropriately designed nonlinear oscillator without positive linear stiffness. NES can suppress vibrations over a wide frequency range due to its targeted energy transfer characteristics. Thus, investigations on NES have attracted a lot of attention since a NES was proposed. Designs, analysis, and applications of NESs are still active since different configurations are needed in various practical circumstances. The present work provides a comprehensive review of state-of-the-art researches on NESs. The work begins with a survey of the generation of a NES and its important vibration control characteristics. The work highlights possible complex dynamics resulting in a NES coupled to a structure. The work also summarizes some significant design on the implements of optimal damping effects and the offsets of NES shortcomings. Then, the work details the applications of NESs in all engineering fields. The concluding remarks suggest further promising directions, such as NESs for multidirectional vibration reduction, NESs with nonlinearities beyond the cubic, potential deterioration caused by a NES, low-cost NESs, NESs for extremely low frequency range, and NESs integrated into active vibration controls. Inerter-based structural vibration control: A state-of-the-art review

This paper investigates wave propagation of size-dependent functionally graded (FG) nanobeams resting on elastic foundation subjected to axial magnetic field based on the nonlocal strain gradient theory and Euler–Bernoulli beam model by using an analytical approach. The nonlocal beam model has a length scale parameter and captures the size influences. Material properties are spatially graded according to sigmoid distribution. A derivation of the governing equations for the wave propagation analysis of nanoscale S-FGM beams is conducted. Then, the dispersion relations between wave frequency and phase velocity with the wave number is investigated. It is found that wave propagation characteristics of nonlocal S-FGM beams are influenced by various parameters including length scale parameter, material graduation, elastic foundation parameters and magnetic field intensity.

Nonlinear vibration absorption of a laminated composite beam is investigated with the account of complex environment (moisture and temperature). A passive efficient nonlinear energy sink (NES) vibration absorber is used to control the transverse vibration. The generalized Hamilton principle is applied to derive a dynamic model of the laminated composite beam coupled with the NES. Numerical simulations reveal the effects of temperature, moisture, and laying angle on natural frequencies. It is numerically found that the NES can rapidly reduce the vibration amplitude. Then, approximate analytical solutions are sought via the harmonic balance method. The approximate analytical solutions are confirmed by the numerical solutions. Amplitude–frequency response curves show that the NES can reduce the amplitude to very low values for various temperatures, moisture levels, and laying angles. In a certain ranges of the NES parameters, different control effects are determined via an approximate analysis. It is demonstrated that the NES is a promising approach to control vibration of a laminated composite beam in complex environment.
