A system and method of performing a beam discovery between a device and a plurality of other devices in a wireless network is disclosed. Sector training sequences to a plurality of other devices are transmitted via a transmit directional antenna having a set of transmit sectors. A plurality of feedback messages are received from the plurality of other devices, where the plurality of feedback messages are indicative of optimum transmit sectors that have been determined at the other devices based at least in part on the sector training sequences. Beam training sequences are transmitted to the plurality of other devices via the transmit directional antenna. A plurality of feedback message indicative of optimum transmit beam directions within the optimum transmit sectors are received from the plurality of other devices.

A TV receiver preliminarily measures and stores, in a memory, data of best receiving directions, each giving maximum signal intensity, of a multi-directional antenna for receivable channels. When the antenna rotationally shifts physically for some reason, one channel is selected and subjected to measurements by an omni-directional scanning again to determine a new best receiving direction. A receiving direction number difference between the stored best receiving direction and the new best receiving direction of the same channel is determined. Using the receiving direction number difference for the one channel, all data stored in the memory are renewed at one time, the data being the best receiving direction numbers and the signal intensities therefor for all the channels. The antenna direction can be quickly adjusted to the rotational shift by new measurements for one channel, without requiring time to make unnecessary measurements for all channels, achieving a best receiving condition steadily.

The present invention relates to a beamforming method for smart
antenna arrays. Smart antennas employ arrays of low gain antennas
connected to a combining/beamforming network. Smart antennas can
provide enhanced coverage through range extension, hole filling and
improved building penetration. By improving transmission and reception
at the base station, the tolerable path losses can be increased whereby the
range of the base station can be improved. A first aspect of the invention
addresses the feedback signalling technique presently being considered
by standards bodies for four antennas in large arrays. The invention is
suitable for CDMA wireless cellular systems, as presently determined for
third generation cellular wireless networks, and other wireless systems
such as TDMA systems and wireless LANs.
