An eyepiece includes a mechanical frame adapted to secure a lens and an image source facility above the lens. The image source facility includes an LED, a planar illumination facility and a reflective display. The planar illumination facility converts a light beam from the LED received on a side of the planar illumination facility into a top emitting planar light source, uniformly illuminates the reflective display, and is substantially transmissive to allow reflected light to pass through towards a beam splitter. The beam splitter is positioned to receive the image light and to reflect a portion onto a mirrored surface. The mirrored surface is positioned and shaped to reflect the image light into an eye of a user of the eyepiece thereby providing an image within a field of view, the mirrored surface further adapted to be partially transmissive within an area of image reflectance.

An augmented reality system provides improved focus of real and virtual objects. A see-through display device includes a variable focus lens a user looks through. A focal region adjustment unit automatically focuses the variable focus lens in a current user focal region. A microdisplay assembly attached to the see-through display device generates a virtual object for display in the user's current focal region by adjusting its focal region. The variable focus lens may also be adjusted to provide one or more zoom features. Visual enhancement of an object may also be provided to improve a user's perception of an object.

A see-through head-mounted display (HMD) device, e.g., in the form of augmented reality glasses, allows a user to view a video display device and an associated augmented reality image. In one approach, the augmented reality image is aligned with edges of the video display device to provide a larger, augmented viewing region. The HMD can include a camera which identifies the edges. The augmented reality image can be synchronized in time with content of the video display device. In another approach, the augmented reality image video provides a virtual audience which accompanies a user in watching the video display device. In another approach, the augmented reality image includes a 3-D which appears to emerge from the video display device, and which is rendered from a perspective of a user's location. In another approach, the augmented reality image can be rendered on a vertical or horizontal surface in a static location.

A head-mounted display provides a user with an augmented view of an object being viewed; a tracking mechanism such as a camera repeatedly determine the position and orientation of the head-mounted display relative the object being viewed; and a computer system provides information for the augmented view and repeatedly updates the augmented view of the object being viewed based on the determined position and orientation of the display. The head-mounted display may be a see-through display; it may be video-based or optical-based, and it may be monoscopic and stereoscopic. The tracking mechanism determines its position using one or more markers or beacons on the object being viewed. The markers may be active or passive, including light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that emit invisible light.

System and method to display maintenance and operational instructions of an apparatus using augmented reality

An augmented reality system provides enhanced situational information to personnel located within an environment. A tracking system obtains viewpoint information corresponding to a real-time view of said environment. A processing system receives information from one or more sensors. Information includes sensor location information and status information about the environment and personnel therein. The processing system generates graphics using the sensor location information and the viewpoint information. Graphics include visual representations of said status information. A display displays the generated graphics on a display at a supervisor station that is outside of said environment such that graphics are superimposed on the real-time view.

Augmented reality-based system and method to show the location of personnel and sensors inside occluded structures and provide increased situation awareness

Systems and methods for providing relative tracking for a user in an unprepared environment, e.g., in the field. A larger mobile unit (110), such as a truck, is tracked precisely in world coordinates using GPS and and/or other tracking technology. A smaller mobile object or unit (122) is then tracked with respect to the larger mobile unit. The tracking information of the smaller mobile object or unit (122) is then combined with the tracking of the larger mobile unit (110) such that the tracking of the smaller mobile object or unit can be provided in world coordinates. The relative tracking methodology has particular utility in the field of augmented reality where precise tracking in an unprepared environment may be desirable, but where a smaller mobile object may not be able to be tracked directly and precisely in world coordinates.

Method and system for relative tracking

A system and method are provided for visualizing a scene that is monitored for substance contamination. The scene is scanned with a substance detector to detect a substance, such as a harmful chemical or biological substance. The position of the substance is determined. Graphical element data that represents the detected substance in the scene is generated. A displayed view of the scene is augmented with the graphical element data based on the position of the detected substance to show the detected substance in the view of the scene and provide the user with the location and type of detected substance shown with reference to the environment.
