A systematic literature review of product platform design under uncertainty

Product design and development (PDD) involves various types of tradeoffs, for which multi-objective optimization has been a prevailing approach. Complex PDD optimization problems are associated with multidisciplinary decision makers and may encompass different levels of the design decision hierarchy. A practical concern is that many conflicting goals with diverse decision variables have to compete to arrive at equilibrium solutions, entailing a paradigm of leader-follower joint optimization (LFJO). In line with a typical decision chain of engineering optimization, comprising such consecutive stages as problem formation, optimization modeling, model solution, and optimization evaluation, this paper provides a state-of-the-art review of the LFJO problems that are widely observed in the PDD literature, along with a survey of LFJO mathematical modeling methods. Also reviewed is the status quo of bilevel programming (BLP) models for LFJO problems with focus on their engineering implications for PDD. The paper also reviews the prevailing algorithms for solving BLP mathematical models, as well as common practice of LFJO model evaluation in the PDD literature. Finally, the critical issues of LFJO problems and outlook for further research are discussed.

A review of leader-follower joint optimization problems and mathematical models for product design and development

Although their potential for high environmental performance is largely accepted, adaptive facades have not yet become widespread in practice. Most of the current examples are developed by engineer-to-order design processes, as project-oriented, custom, and complex solutions. More simple and reliable solutions are needed to support the reuse of technical solutions between projects and increase the feasibility of adaptive facades. Therefore, this research aims to develop a procedure to design adaptive facades whose parts are based on engineered standard products with the least number of parts and layers. The research is initiated through the generation of concepts for designing adaptive facades to be manufactured using standard products. From several concepts, ‘redesigning dynamic adaptive facades’ has been selected for further investigation, as it pursues the goals for a solution determined for this research. A preliminary case study is conducted to redesign an adaptive facade to be manufactured with standard products. Its process steps are captured and analysed, and the steps that need improvement are revealed. To systematise and improve the captured redesign process, facade design and product design methodologies are analysed in the context of adaptive facade design. Redesign and reverse engineering processes used in product design are adapted and merged with facade and adaptive facade design processes, and a 5-phase adaptive facade redesign procedure is outlined. Each phase is developed based on mature tools and methods used in product and facade design. An iterative loop of development, application test, and review process is carried out for development of the process steps. Thus, a redesign procedure is generated by the combined application of DFMA and TRIZ in the synthesis of reverse engineering and redesign processes. Consequently, the application of the redesign procedure is demonstrated through a case study. The case study revealed that the procedure has the ability to generate a facade redesign that has a higher constructability index than the reference facade.

Adaptable design has the potential to improve product competitiveness through meeting customers’ needs in the product life cycle. Design of open-architecture products has been proposed using the adaptable design method with open and adaptable as well as standard interfaces. Effective tools are required for engineers to apply the concept and approaches of the adaptable design in their daily design processes. This research proposes an optimization method of the adaptable design for open-architecture products. Mathematical models and algorithms considering both adaptability and openness have been developed to identify an optimal design of the adaptable product configuration considering the existing modules and products. An integrated system framework and optimization methods have been implemented as a cyber-enabled tool for the adaptable design of open-architecture products to enable users and vendors to participate in the product development processes using open, adaptable, and standard interfaces. Design of an industrial product was carried out to verify the proposed methods and tools. The system usability, effectiveness, and efficiency were also evaluated.
