An electric power-steering device has a speed-reducing mechanism (17) for reducing the speed of an output shaft (16) of an electric motor (15). The speed-reducing mechanism (17) has an internal gear (39) engaged and rotated with the output shaft (16) and an external gear (40) with which the internal gear (39) internally meshes. A drive pulley (41) rotatable together with the external gear (40) and a driven pulley (42) provided so as to surround a steering shaft are connected by an endless belt (43). Speed reduction is obtained by the internal gear (39) and the external gear (40), and the speed-reducing mechanism (17) as a whole achieves a high reduction ratio without greatly reducing the diameter of the drive pulley (41).

A chirped pulse amplification system includes one or more polarization compensator configured to compensate for polarization altering elements with the chirped pulse amplification system. The polarization compensator is responsive to a sensor configured to provide feedback to the polarization compensator. In some embodiments, the chirped pulse amplification system further includes a controller configured to automatically adjust the polarization compensator responsive to the sensor. The sensor is optionally a power sensor.

A horizontal type casting machine capable of facilitating installation of a water jacket core (122) and providing sufficient fluidity of the molten metal without generation of gas defect in casting a water-cooled type cylinder block. In the horizontal type casting machine, a cavity for the cylinder block is oriented vertically in which a cylinder bore portion of the cylinder block is positioned up and a crank chamber is positioned down. The cavity is defined by a stationary die (103), a movable die (104) and movable cores. A movable slide core is provided movable relative to the movable die. When the movable slide core is moved to its retracted position, large working space is provided for installing the water jacket core (122) at a given position. By the retracted movement of the movable slide core, large working space can be provided, thereby facilitating installation of the water jacket core (122). Further, since the water jacket core (122) is set in its suspended fashion, easy positioning of the water jacket core results.

An electric power steering unit includes an electric motor (14) that applies
assisting force with respect to a rotating operation of the steering wheel. In one
embodiment, the steering torque TM detected by a steering torque sensor (21) is
converted into a command current value I* for the electric motor (14) by a conversion
means. A rotational force control means (44) controls the driving of the electric motor
(14) in accordance with the command current value I*. A differential means (51) can
calculate a differential value of the steering torque TM. Based on the calculated
differential value, the inertia compensation control amount TM is added to the steering
torque TM, thus reducing the steering operation load of the steering wheel at the start of
a steering operation. The steering speed also can be detected. The inertia
compensation control amount TM can be decreased with an increase in detected
steering speed, thus avoiding an uncomfortable steering feel due to the difference in the
steering speeds.

A developing device used in an electrophotographic apparatus has seal members (60) fixedly disposed between both end portions of a developing roller (31) and those portions of inner walls of a device casing (21) which correspond to both end portions of the developing roller (31). The seal members (60) are made of a material which can be charged by friction with the developing roller (31) to have the same polarity as charged toner. The toner is blocked by the seal members (60) and prevented from entering end portions of the developing roller (31).
