Progress in material selection for solid oxide fuel cell technology: A review

Multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) production and sales figures are the highest among fine-ceramic products developed in the past 30 years. The total worldwide production and sales reached 550 billion pieces and 6 billion dollars, respectively in 2000. In the course of progress, the development of base-metal electrode (BME) technology played an important role in expanding the application area. In this review, the recent progress in MLCCs with BME nickel (Ni) electrodes is reviewed from the viewpoint of nonreducible dielectric materials. Using intermediate-ionic-size rare-earth ion (Dy2O3, Ho2O3, Er2O3, Y2O3) doped BaTiO3 (ABO3)-based dielectrics, highly reliable Ni-MLCCs with a very thin layer below 2 µm in thickness have been developed. The effect of site occupancy of rare-earth ions in BaTiO3 on the electrical properties and microstructure of nonreducible dielectrics is studied systematically. It appears that intermediate-ionic-size rare-earth ions occupy both A- and B-sites in the BaTiO3 lattice and effectively control the donor/acceptor dopant ratio and microstructural evolution. The relationship between the electrical properties and the microstructure of Ni-MLCCs is also presented.

Base-Metal Electrode-Multilayer Ceramic Capacitors: Past, Present and Future Perspectives

The progress in the research and development of high temperature sodium batteries suggests that all-solid-state batteries with inorganic or polymer solid electrolytes are promising power sources for a wide range of applications due to their high thermal stability, reliability, long-cycle life and versatile geometries. The electrolytes play a fundamental role in terms of current (power) density, the time stability, and the safety of batteries and, as a result, their continuous improvement and innovation are indeed critical to success. In fact, inorganic solid electrolytes pave the way for improving the cost-effective development of rechargeable sodium batteries. This review describes a state-of-the-art overview of most of the Na+ conductors for use as electrolytes in sodium/sulphur and ZEBRA batteries. The emphasis of this article is on inorganic solid electrolytes, especially, ceramic and glass-ceramic electrolytes as promising alternatives applicable to all solid-state batteries. As part of a continuous effort to find new materials that operate at room temperature and moderate temperatures, NASICON electrolytes will also be considered. Polymer electrolytes based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) are also very suitable for all solid-state batteries. Hence, the review focuses on ion transport based on the observed conductivity, electrolyte preparation, safety and environmental impact.

High temperature sodium batteries: status, challenges and future trends

High temperature solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) has prospect and potential to generate electricity from fossil fuels with high efficiency and very low greenhouse gas emissions as compared to traditional thermal power plants. In the last 10 years, there has been significant progress in the materials development and stack technologies in SOFC. The objective of this paper is to review the development of anode materials in SOFC from the viewpoint of materials microstructure and performance associated with the fabrication and optimization processes. Latest development and achievement in the Ni/Y2O3-ZrO2 (Ni/YSZ) cermet anodes, alternative and conducting oxide anodes and anode-supported substrate materials are presented. Challenges and research trends based on the fundamental understanding of the materials science and engineering for the anode development for the commercially viable SOFC technologies are discussed.

A review of anode materials development in solid oxide fuel cells

The formation mechanism of the core-shell structure of a BaTiO3(BT)–MgO–Ho2O3-based system was studied. Mg reacted with BT at low temperatures and showed poor diffusivity compared with Ho. The core-shell structure was considered to be formed by the suppression of the diffusion of Ho into the core region by Mg. Also, replacement modes of Mg and Ho in perovskite were investigated. Lattice parameters were determined at temperatures higher than the Curie temperature in order to avoid crystal structure change. It was confirmed that Mg dissolved in Ti site, and Ho dissolved in both Ba and Ti sites. This indicates that Mg ions act as acceptors and Ho ions act as both donors and acceptors in the shell phase.

The Mechanism of Reduction of Iron Oxides

The effect of re-oxidation treatment on the solubility in dopants and the dielectric properties of Ho–Mg- and Ho–Mn-substituted BaTiO3 was investigated. The lattice parameter and electrical resistivity results indicated that the predominant occupational sites of Ho ions changed from A-sites to B-sites by increasing the doped content in both systems. In the case of Ho–Mn-substituted samples, the decrease in lattice parameter and a shift of the Curie point (Tc) to higher temperatures by re-oxidation treatment were observed in the range in which Ho ions predominantly occupy B-sites (act as acceptors). On the other hand, Ho–Mg-substituted samples showed little change. Electron spin resonance measurements revealed that these changes due to re-oxidation were based on the decrease of the ionic size of Mn due to the oxidation of Mn2+ to Mn3+ or Mn4+. The occupational sites of Ho ions strongly affected the valence state of Mn and the dielectric properties of BaTiO3.
