Abstract: By unambiguous syntheses, the structures of maturinone and cacalol were shown to be 3,5-dimethylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione (1) and 5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-3,4,5-trimethylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-9-ol (2), respectively. 3,8-Dimethylnaphtho[2,3-b]furan-4,9-dione (1a), an isomer of maturione, was also synthesized.
