Heteroatom doped graphene engineering for energy storage and conversion

A facile one-step method was demonstrated for the electrodeposition of manganese–nickel sulfide (Mn–Ni–S) 3D interconnected sheets on nickel foam substrates. The as-synthesized materials were characterized using field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Upon their use as supercapacitor electrodes, the electrodeposited Mn–Ni–S showed exceptionally high specific capacitance (2849 and 1986 F/g at 1 and 5 A/g, respectively) and an excellent rate capability. Using Fe3O4-GR as the negative electrode and the Mn–Ni–S 3D interconnected sheets as the positive electrode to assemble an asymmetric supercapacitor device revealed high power density (800 W kg–1) and energy density (40.44 Wh kg–1) with 90% capacitance retention and a Columbic efficiency of 100% after 11 000 cycles, indicating the high potential of the fabricated materials for practical energy storage devices.

Supercapacitor electrode materials: addressing challenges in mechanism and charge storage

Selecting suitable active materials with unique design microstructures can deliver a new generation of supercapacitors with high energy-storage performance. In this work, Zn0.76Co0.24S microspheres containing nanoflakes on its surface were successfully synthesized using a simple one-step hydrothermal method, achieving an excellent electrochemical energy storage behavior owing to its good conductivity, and unique structure that allowed effective transportation paths for ions/electrons. The as-prepared Zn0.76Co0.24S was used as an electrode material for supercapacitors, and it displayed an excellent capacitance of 2393 F g−1 (796 C g−1) at 1 A g−1. For a real application, a hybrid device was assembled using Zn0.76Co0.24S as a positive electrode and activated carbon as a negative electrode. This led to delivering high specific energy of 58.8 Wh kg−1 at a specific power of 815 W kg−1, showing excellent cycling stability of 90% capacity retention of the initial capacity after 5000 cycles.
