The conventional grid has more Aggregate Technology and Commercial losses (AT&C) but with the evolution of smart grids a drastic change came to the system. This introduces with a two-way communication where not only information and data are exchanged between the utility and its consumers but also electricity exchange also takes place. It is a developing network of communications that controls computers automation and new technologies and tools working together so as to make the grid more efficient, more reliable, more secure and producing greener energy. The smart grid enables newer technologies to be integrated such as wind, thermal and solar power production. From adopting to new changes in our power system to the challenge of grid stabilization using PMU. With the idea of using the intermittent sources, they discovered a technique which not only enhances the power generation technique but also enables the user to generate and consume the same energy. The user can generate energy using PV solar panel and consume that generated power, not only the user consume that generated power but also can give the unconsumed power back to the grid. This helps the utility to manage the power/energy demand in those places where requirement of energy is more. In this way, there is no power outages, and no harm to environment is caused as the energy that is generated is “green energy.” This paper presents the evolution of smart grid and net metering system taken by Indian Ministry of Power to implement Smart Grid in Indian Power System.

Environmental awareness, current trends in the power market, the quest for energy efficiency, and the progressive transformation of electricity consumers to prosumers are the primary drives for the gradual shift from the old power grids into the smart grids. The deployment of renewable dispersed generation systems and energy storage units uncovered the need for smart metering to oversee and control those generation systems. This chapter presents the design and development of a robust, efficient, multi-functional, and low-cost smart meter. The proposed metering system has added features that enabled the utilities to recover the meter energy measurement data remotely. The system allows monitoring and transmission of energy consumed in real-time. It considers using a microcontroller board as the controlling unit to execute control and monitor activities. A liquid crystal display displays standard electrical measurements such as current, voltage, power, and energy consumption. The external communication device is required in the unit’s actualization, in conjunction with the control unit based on the existing mobile technology. It stands as the intermediary between the nearby available utility station and consumers or end-users. In conclusion, liquid crystal display displays real-time based data for the end-user to visualize. The usage data billing is done within thirty seconds, stored, and trans-received the process for data collection, keeping, and billing generation.

In order to ensure the continuity of energy, it is necessary to regulate electricity consumption by providing the necessary real-time data to consumers. Currently, real-time data on energy consumption and information on the appropriate consumption time are not fully available for consumers. In addition, data is read manually at the end of each month to provide monthly invoices, a workforce is needed to complete this work, and errors occur due to human intervention. The proposed real-time invoice-based smart meter system is a measuring device to automatically read the data and provide the consumer with information on the energy consumed per hour, day, and month. The device helps the consumer choose the most suitable time for energy consumption and predicts the time when the amount of energy consumed exceeds the desired power.

A Real-Time Invoice Based Smart Meter Design with Mobile Application

Smart meter is an electronic device that measures the energy consumption by different time intervals, this time interval may be in minutes, hours, days or months. The proposed technology collects the data from meter and transfer that data to central database for storing data, analyzing and also monitoring the safety related issues. Moreover, it also includes the module which has provision of on demand units loading facility from the energy provider company by just sending a request SMS. The proposed design has been first implemented in software and then a prototype model has been developed, which communicates with the energy service provider for the consumed energy data through GSM network. The purpose of this paper is to present theory and implementation related to remote monitoring and controlling of the energy meter by using GSM architecture. This GSM based system enables the electricity department to get the meter readings regularly while avoiding manual meter reading. The work also enables prepaid billing, electricity management, energy saving and implements a mechanism for electricity theft detection.
