Photoreduction of CO2 into sustainable and green solar fuels is generally believed to be an appealing solution to simultaneously overcome both environmental problems and energy crisis. The low selectivity of challenging multi-electron CO2 photoreduction reactions makes it one of the holy grails in heterogeneous photocatalysis. This Review highlights the important roles of cocatalysts in selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction into solar fuels using semiconductor catalysts. A special emphasis in this review is placed on the key role, design considerations and modification strategies of cocatalysts for CO2 photoreduction. Various cocatalysts, such as the biomimetic, metal-based, metal-free, and multifunctional ones, and their selectivity for CO2 photoreduction are summarized and discussed, along with the recent advances in this area. This Review provides useful information for the design of highly selective cocatalysts for photo(electro)reduction and electroreduction of CO2 and complements the existing reviews on various semiconductor photocatalysts.

Cocatalysts for Selective Photoreduction of CO2 into Solar Fuels.

Dramatically increased CO2 concentration from several point sources is perceived to cause severe greenhouse effect towards the serious ongoing global warming with associated climate destabilization, inducing undesirable natural calamities, melting of glaciers, and extreme weather patterns. CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) has received tremendous attention due to its significant role in intensifying global warming. Considering the lack of a timely review on the state-of-the-art progress of promising CCU techniques, developing an appropriate and prompt summary of such advanced techniques with a comprehensive understanding is necessary. Thus, it is imperative to provide a timely review, given the fast growth of sophisticated CO2 capture and utilization materials and their implementation. In this work, we critically summarized and comprehensively reviewed the characteristics and performance of both liquid and solid CO2 adsorbents with possible schemes for the improvement of their CO2 capture ability and advances in CO2 utilization. Their industrial applications in pre- and post-combustion CO2 capture as well as utilization were systematically discussed and compared. With our great effort, this review would be of significant importance for academic researchers for obtaining an overall understanding of the current developments and future trends of CCU. This work is bound to benefit researchers in fields relating to CCU and facilitate the progress of significant breakthroughs in both fundamental research and commercial applications to deliver perspective views for future scientific and industrial advances in CCU.

Industrial carbon dioxide capture and utilization: state of the art and future challenges

Transforming CO2 into fuels by utilizing sunlight is promising to synchronously overcome global warming and energy-supply issues. It is crucial to design efficient photocatalysts with intriguing features such as robust light-harvesting ability, strong redox potential, high charge-separation, and excellent durability. Hitherto, a single-component photocatalyst is incapable to simultaneously meet all these criteria. Inspired by natural photosynthesis, constructing artificial Z-scheme photocatalysts provides a facile way to conquer these bottlenecks. In this review, we firstly introduce the fundamentals of photocatalytic CO2 reduction and Z-scheme systems. Thereafter we discuss state-of-the-art Z-scheme photocatalytic CO2 reduction, whereby special attention is placed on the predominant factors that affect photoactivity. Additionally, further modifications that are important for efficient photocatalysis are reviewed.

Z-Scheme Photocatalytic Systems for Carbon Dioxide Reduction: Where Are We Now?

In this paper, an ultrathin 2D/2D Ti3C2/g-C3N4 heterojunction was synthesized by direct calcination the mixture of bulk Ti3C2 and urea, where urea not only acts as the gas template to exfoliate Ti3C2 into nanosheets, but also as the precursor of g-C3N4 to craft Ti3C2/g-C3N4 heterojunction. CO2 photoreduction activity tests reveal that pure g-C3N4 (UCN) exhibits very weak photoactivity. However, when Ti3C2 was coupled with g-C3N4, the photocatalytic performance is soaringly enhanced. The optimal sample (10TC) shows the yields of 5.19 and 0.044 μmol h−1 g−1 for CO and CH4, respectively, and the total CO2 conversion is 8.1 times higher than that of UCN. The enhanced CO2 photoreduction activity is mainly attributed to the combined effects of (1) improved CO2 adsorption and activation, and (2) the construction of ultrathin 2D/2D Ti3C2/g-C3N4 heterojunction, where the intimate contact stimulates an efficient spatial separation of photo-excited charge carriers.

2D/2D Ti3C2 MXene/g-C3N4 nanosheets heterojunction for high efficient CO2 reduction photocatalyst: Dual effects of urea

Polymeric graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based semiconducting nanostructured materials: Synthesis methods, properties and photocatalytic applications.

Phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitrides (P-g-C3N4) have recently emerged as promising visible-light photocatalysts for both hydrogen generation and clean environment applications because of fast charge carrier transfer and increased light absorption. However, their photocatalytic performances on CO2 reduction have gained little attention. In this work, phosphorus-doped g-C3N4 nanotubes are synthesized through the one-step thermal reaction of melamine and sodium hypophosphite monohydrate (NaH2PO2·H2O). The phosphine gas generated from the thermal decomposition of NaH2PO2·H2O induces the formation of P-g-C3N4 nanotubes from g-C3N4 nanosheets, leads to an enlarged BET surface area and a unique mesoporous structure, and creates an amino-rich surface. The interstitial doping phosphorus also down shifts the conduction and valence band positions and narrows the band gap of g-C3N4.
