This study examines the relationship between environmental attitudes as measured by the new environmental paradigm (NEP) and nature-based tourism (NBT) motivations based on data gathered from a national forest park in China. The results indicate that tourists' environmental attitudes are heterogeneous across all four tourism motivations. Specifically, those who are more supportive of limits to growth and who are more concerned about ecocrisis tend to have a higher desire to be close to nature, to learn about nature, and to escape from routine and issues associated with cities. In addition, those whose motivations are oriented to develop skills and abilities or seek to experience new things, environments, and social contact tend to be more supportive of the notion of human over nature. Thus, it can be concluded that environmental attitudes and NBT motivations are closely and positively related. Research limits, theoretical and practical implications, and future research needs of the study are discussed.

On the need for critical pedagogy in tourism education

The philosophic practitioner and the curriculum space.

The internship is one of the most effective models of experiential learning in hospitality education. However, to be successful, it requires the cooperation of students, employers, and educators. This article identifies the role and value of the internship in hospitality education. Its benefits and drawbacks are discussed from the perspectives of the three stakeholders, and an overall assessment is discussed. The article ends by proposing suggestions for future research.

A Review of Hospitality Internship: Different Perspectives of Students, Employers, and Educators

Tourism education at universities tends to focus on enabling students for future careers in the industry. Little attention has been devoted to the meaning of tourism education. This paper attempts to promote awareness of overlooked perspectives and critical issues in tourism education by examining two possible approaches to educating future tourism professionals. It discusses tourism education from the perspective of employability as the primary goal. The paper also elaborates on the perspective of providing students with a philosophical and sociological foundation for decisionmaking strategies, as well as for professional preparation.

Rethinking tourism education: what should schools teach?

Exploring social carrying capacity based on perceived levels of crowding: A case study of Hanauma Bay, Hawaii

Seniors are a growing segment among Japanese outbound travelers. Given that Hawaii is
one of the most visited destinations by Japanese travelers, it is expected that the proportion of seniors
will continue to grow in accordance with social trends of aging adults in Japan. The purpose of this
article is to examine the satisfaction of Japanese senior travelers based on their expectations of important
destination attributes of the Hawaiian Islands in relation to the travelers� performance judgment
of these attributes. This study employs an Importance�Performance Analysis (IPA) to determine critical
attributes of this destination. A focus group with tourism industry professionals resulted in 15
distinct attributes of Hawaii as a tourist destination. Respondents rated the importance level of each
attribute on a 6-point Likert scale ranging from 1 = not important to 6 = extremely important. In
addition, respondents evaluated Hawaii�s performance of these same destination attributes on another
6-point Likert scale, ranging from 1 = very poor to 6 = excellent. Questions also focused on the travelers�
trip-related characteristics and demographics. Respondents were selected from Japanese travelers
who were 20 years or older, and had visited Hawaii for pleasure travel. Of the 211 questionnaires
collected, 73 of the surveys were completed by Japanese travelers over the age of 50. Of this group,
senior travelers were mostly satisfied with the destination attributes of Hawaii, specifically those
factors that were related to Hawaii�s natural resources as well as the characteristics related to a comfortable
trip. Interestingly, the features related to physical activities such as golfing, water sports, and
outdoor activities were not viewed as important travel destination attributes for Hawaii for both seniors
and the younger Japanese travelers. On the other hand, improvement in local transportation and
accommodations were destination attributes that travelers felt needed attention. These results provide
some useful insights for developing effective marketing strategies to attract Japanese senior travelers
to Hawaii, as well as the usefulness of using the IPA methodology.

Applying importance-performance analysis for Japanese senior travelers to Hawaii

Adventure tourism and eco-tourism are becoming increasingly popular among travelers over the world. This case study identifies environmental perceptions of a random sample of Japanese (adventure) tourists on the Island of Oahu, Hawaii. The modified New Environmental Paradigm (NEP) scale (Dunlap & Van Liere, 1978) was utlized to measure environmental perceptions of travelers. Despite the small sample size, the data provided a general socio-demographic profile of Japanese adventure tourists, and their environmental perceptions. Study findings may serve to support resource management decisions for the development of adventure tourism that is believed to become a significant niche market in Hawaii.
