Silicon (Si) is one of the most promising anode materials for high-energy lithium-ion batteries. However, the widespread application of Si-based anodes is inhibited by large volume change, unstable solid electrolyte interphase, and poor electrical conductivity. During the past decade, significant efforts have been made to overcome these major challenges toward industrial applications. This review summarizes the recent development of microscale Si-based electrodes fabricated by Si microparticles or other industrial bulk materials from the perspective of industrialization. First, the challenges for microscale Si anodes are clarified. Second, structural design strategies of stable micro-sized Si materials are discussed. Third, other critical practical metrics, such as robust binder construction and electrolyte design, are also highlighted. Finally, future trends and perspectives on the commercialization of Si-based anodes are provided.

Scalable Spinning, Winding, and Knitting Graphene Textile TENG for Energy Harvesting and Human Motion Recognition

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the preferred battery system for portable electronic devices and transportation equipment due to their high specific energy, good cycling performance, low self-discharge, and absence of memory effect. However, excessively low ambient temperatures will seriously affect the performance of LIBs, which are almost incapable of discharging at −40~−60 °C. There are many factors affecting the low-temperature performance of LIBs, and one of the most important is the electrode material. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop electrode materials or modify existing materials in order to obtain excellent low-temperature LIB performance. A carbon-based anode is one candidate for use in LIBs. In recent years, it has been found that the diffusion coefficient of lithium ion in graphite anodes decreases more obviously at low temperatures, which is an important factor limiting its low-temperature performance. However, the structure of amorphous carbon materials is complex; they have good ionic diffusion properties, and their grain size, specific surface area, layer spacing, structural defects, surface functional groups, and doping elements may have a greater impact on their low-temperature performance. In this work, the low-temperature performance of LIBs was achieved by modifying the carbon-based material from the perspectives of electronic modulation and structural engineering.

Electronic Modulation and Structural Engineering of Carbon-Based Anodes for Low-Temperature Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Review

Li‐ion batteries (LIBs) that promise both safety and high energy density are critical for a new‐energy future. However, recent studies on battery thermal runaway (TR) suggest that the higher the energy is compressed in a battery, the thermal accidents with fires and explosions can occur in a more catastrophic way. This “trade‐off” between energy density and safety poses challenging obstacles toward the future applications of the developing high‐energy chemistries. Herein, the thermal studies on the most appealing high‐energy (HE)‐LIB chemistries are carefully reviewed. The TR characters of the HE‐LIBs, the material thermal failure behaviors as well as the underneath reaction mechanisms, and the most advanced TR mitigation technologies are comprehensively summarized. Moreover, the effectiveness of different TR mitigation routes is analyzed. Based on the analysis, the main challenges for TR mitigation in HE chemistries are further explained. Finally, opinions on the future TR mechanism studies and the promising safety design routes to overcome this intrinsic “trade‐off” between high energy and safety are presented.

Challenges and Opportunities to Mitigate the Catastrophic Thermal Runaway of High‐Energy Batteries

With the development of 5G, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things, diversified sensors (such as the signal acquisition module) have become more and more important in people’s daily life. According to the extensive use of various distributed wireless sensors, powering them has become a big problem. Among all the powering methods, the self-powered sensor system based on triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) has shown its superiority. This review focuses on four major application areas of wireless sensors based on TENG, including environmental monitoring, human monitoring, industrial production, and daily life. The perspectives and outlook of the future development of self-powered wireless sensors are discussed.

Recent Progress in Self-Powered Wireless Sensors and Systems Based on TENG

Battery safety is vital to the application of lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs), especially for high energy density cells applied in electric vehicles. As an anode material with high theoretical capacity and natural abundance, Si has received extensive attention for LIBs. However, it suffers from severe electrode pulverization during cycling due to large volume changes and an unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), resulting in accelerated capacity fading and even safety hazards. Therefore, safe and long‐term cycling of Si‐based anodes, especially under high‐temperature cycling, is highly challenging for state‐of‐the‐art high‐energy LIBs. The thermal behavior of SEI is crucial for a high safety battery as the decomposition of SEI is the first step in thermal runaway. Here, highly reversible and thermotolerant microsized Si anodes for safe LIBs are demonstrated. Comprehensive electrochemical/mechanical/thermochemical behaviors of the SEI are systematically investigated. The rational design of robust SEI endows the Si‐based cells with long‐term durability at elevated temperatures and superior thermal safety. This work paves the way for designing industrial‐scale, low‐cost, microsized Si anodes with applications in next‐generation LIBs with high energy densities and high safety.

Interface Engineering to Boost Thermal Safety of Microsized Silicon Anodes in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Incidents in the use of lithium-ion batteries are usually caused by the malfunction of flammable organic liquid electrolytes with poor thermal stability. Therefore, the development of noncombustible electrolytes is regarded as one of the most effective means to prevent the safety hazards of lithium-ion batteries. Ionic liquids have attracted much interest recently, mainly due to their high ionic conductivity, low volatility, and incombustibility. The application of ionic liquids to the preparation of quasi-solid-state gel electrolytes combines the advantages of ionic liquids and avoids the risks of organic liquid electrolytes. Therefore, the solid-state ionogels have been considered as a promising alternative electrolyte system, especially for the much-desired energy storage devices with higher energy density and flexibility. This review focuses on the recent progress of ionogel electrolytes for lithium-ion batteries. The preparation strategies for ionogel electrolytes based on different frameworks, namely inorganic matrix, organic matrix, and organic-inorganic hybrid matrix, are discussed. Subsequently, efforts to improve the properties of the ionogel electrolytes, including the ionic conductivity, mechanical properties, and lithium-ion transfer number, are summarized. Besides, the applications of ionogel electrolytes in high-voltage lithium-ion batteries and lithium metal batteries as well as the batteries under extreme environments are outlined. Finally, the perspectives in studying and improving the performances of ionogel electrolytes for advanced lithium-ion batteries are provided.
