Marine natural products.

The biodiversity of the marine environment and the associated chemical diversity constitute a practically unlimited resource of new antitumor agents in the field of the development of marine bioactive substances. In this review, the progress on studies of antitumor peptides from marine sources is provided. The biological properties and mechanisms of action of different marine peptides are described; information about their molecular diversity is also presented. Novel peptides that induce apoptosis signal pathway, affect the tubulin-microtubule equilibrium and inhibit angiogenesis are presented in association with their pharmacological properties. It is intended to provide useful information for further research in the fields of marine antitumor peptides.

Marine natural product peptides with therapeutic potential: Chemistry, biosynthesis, and pharmacology

Marine metabolites: the sterols of soft coral.

Five new ecdysteroids, hyousterones A−D (2−5) and abeohyousterone (6), have been isolated from the Antarctic tunicate Synoicum adareanum along with the known ecdysteroid diaulusterol B (1). Hyousterones B (3) and D (5) are unusual ecdysteroids in bearing the 14β-hydroxyl group, and abeohyousterone incorporates the 13(14→8) abeo steroid skeleton, reflecting a rearrangement of the steroid C/D ring system. Abeohyousterone has moderate cytotoxicity toward several cancer cell lines. Hyousterones bearing the 14α-hydroxy group (2 and 4) were weakly cytotoxic, while the 14β-hydroxy hyousterones (3 and 5) were devoid of cytotoxicity. The 14β-hydroxy function may be a thermodynamic pathway to the 13(14→8) abeo steroid skeleton. Hyousterones, abeohyousterone, and diaulusterol B are the first ecdysteroids reported from tunicates.

Ecdysteroids from the Antarctic tunicate Synoicum adareanum.

A new cyclic peptide, prepatellamide A (1), along with three known cyclic peptides (2)— (4), was isolated from the ascidianLissoclinum patella. The structure of prepatellamide A was determined from one- and two-dimensional1H and13C NMR spectra. The known cyclic peptides were identified as patellamides A (2), B (3) and C (4).

24ξ-Methyl 5α-cholestane-3α,6,β,9α,25-tetrol 25-monoacetate, a novel polyhydroxylated steroid from the soft coral Sarcophyton tortuosum

A novel skeleton compound benkarlaol (1) was isolated from the red alga Laurencia karlae Zhang et Xia, collected from the Nansha Islands in the South China Sea. Its structure and relative stereochemistry were determined by spectroscopic data, especially extensive ID and 2D NMR experiments.
