Fiber optic interferometers to sense various physical parameters including temperature, strain, pressure, and refractive index have been widely investigated. They can be categorized into four types: Fabry-Perot, Mach-Zehnder, Michelson, and Sagnac. In this paper, each type of interferometric sensor is reviewed in terms of operating principles, fabrication methods, and application fields. Some specific examples of recently reported interferometeric sensor technologies are presented in detail to show their large potential in practical applications. Some of the simple to fabricate but exceedingly effective Fabry-Perot interferometers, implemented in both extrinsic and intrinsic structures, are discussed. Also, a wide variety of Mach-Zehnder and Michelson interferometric sensors based on photonic crystal fibers are introduced along with their remarkable sensing performances. Finally, the simultaneous multi-parameter sensing capability of a pair of long period fiber grating (LPG) is presented in two types of structures; one is the Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed in a double cladding fiber and the other is the highly sensitive Sagnac interferometer cascaded with an LPG pair.

Interferometric Fiber Optic Sensors

We report a miniaturized fiber inline Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI), with an open micro-notch cavity fabricated by one-step fs laser micromachining, for highly sensitive refractive index measurement. The device was tested for measurement of the refractive indices of various liquids including isopropanol, acetone and methanol at room temperature, as well as the temperature-dependent refractive index of deionized water from 3 to 90 degrees C. The sensitivity for measurement of refractive index change of water was 1163 nm/RIU at the wavelength of 1550 nm. The temperature cross-sensitivity of the device was about 1.1x10(-6) RIU/degrees C. The small size, all-fiber structure, small temperature dependence, linear response and high sensitivity, make the device attractive for chemical and biological sensing.

Temperature-insensitive miniaturized fiber inline Fabry-Perot interferometer for highly sensitive refractive index measurement

We propose and demonstrate a thinned fiber based Mach-Zehnder interferometer for multi-purpose sensing applications. The sensor head is formed by all-fiber in-line singlemode-multimode-thinned-singlemode (SMTS) fiber structure, only using the splicing method. The principle of operation relies on the effect that the thinned fiber cladding modes interference with the core mode by employing a multimode fiber as a mode coupler. Experimental results showed that the liquid refractive index information can be simultaneously provided from measuring the sensitivity of the liquid level. A 9.00 mm long thinned fiber sensor at a wavelength of 1538.7228 nm exhibits a water level sensitivity of -175.8 pm/mm, and refractive index sensitivity as high as -1868.42 (pm/mm)/RIU, respectively. The measuring method is novel, for the first time to our knowledge. In addition, it also demonstrates that by monitoring the wavelength shift, the sensor at a wavelength of 1566.4785 nm exhibits a refractive index sensitivity of -25.2935 nm/RIU, temperature sensitivity of 0.0615 nm/°C, and axial strain sensitivity of -2.99 pm/μe, respectively. Moreover, the sensor fabrication process is very simple and cost effective.

All-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers for sensing applications

DOI: 10.1002/adom.201801433 Scientific American selects plasmonic sensing as the top 10 emerging technologies of 2018.[15] Almost every single new plasmonic or photonic structure would be explored to test its sensing ability.[16–29] These works tend to report the sensing performance of their own structure. Some declare that their sensitivity breaks the world record. However, there is still a missing literature on what the world record really is, the gap between the experiments and the theoretical limit, as well as the differences between metal-based plasmonic sensors and dielectric-based photonic sensors. To push plasmonic and photonic sensors into industrial applications, an optical sensing technology map is absolutely necessary. This review aims to cover a wide range of most representative plasmonic and photonic sensors, and place them into a single map. The sensor performances of different structures will be distinctly illustrated. Future researchers could plot the sensing ability of their new sensors into this technology map and gauge their performances in this field. In this review, we focus on optical refractive index (RI) sensors with no fluorescent labeling required. We will utilize two parameters to characterize and compare the performance of optical RI sensors: sensitivity to RI change (denoted by symbol SRI) and figure of merit (in short, FoM). For simplicity, we restrict our discussions to bulk RI change, where the change in RI occurs within the whole sample. There is another case where the RI variation occurs only within a very small volume close to the sensor surface. This surface RI sensitivity is proportional to the bulk RI sensitivity, the ratio of the thickness of the layer within which the surface RI variation occurs, and the penetration depth of the optical mode.[6] The bulk RI sensitivity defines the ratio of the change in sensor output (e.g., resonance angle, intensity, or resonant wavelength) to the bulk RI variations. Here, we limit our discussions to the spectral interrogations and the bulk RI sensitivity SRI is given by[3,5–7,30]

Optical Refractive Index Sensors with Plasmonic and Photonic Structures: Promising and Inconvenient Truth

A review of the salinity measurement technology based on the optical fiber sensor is presented. The principles of optical fiber measurement, the structures of probes and the characteristics of various sensing structures are concerned. Firstly, this paper discusses the relationship between the salinity and refractive index, and the effect of ion pairs on the refractive index. Secondly, four methods of direct or non-direct measurements of salinity are summarized, including optical refraction method, optical fiber grating, optical interference and surface plasmon effect. Subsequently, the article compares performances of various sensing structures and analyses the advantages and disadvantages of different sensors. Finally, a prospect of salinity measurement requirement and the development direction of fiber-optic sensors in this area are addressed.

Review of salinity measurement technology based on optical fiber sensor

We propose and demonstrate a Fabry-Perot (F-P) optical fiber tip sensor for high-resolution refractive-index measurement fabricated by using 157-nm laser micromachining, for the first time to our knowledge. The sensor head consists of a short air F-P cavity near the tip of a single-mode fiber and the fiber tip. The external refractive index is determined according to the maximum fringe contrast of the interference fringes in the reflective spectrum of the sensor. Such a sensor can provide temperature-independent measurement of practically any refractive index larger than that of air and offers a refractive-index resolution of ~4 x 10(-5) in its linear operating range. The experimental data agree well with the theoretical results.

Laser-micromachined Fabry-Perot optical fiber tip sensor for high-resolution temperature-independent measurement of refractive index.

The invention relates to an optical fiber sensor. The invention discloses an optical fiber destabilization detecting method combining based on a phase sensitivity light time domain reflection and a polarization sensitivity light time domain reflection method and distributed optical fiber sensing system thereof to improve the detecting accuracy and reliability of the optical fiber destabilization.The method comprises: a. injecting an optical signal with determined polarization state into the optical fiber; b. receiving the back rayleigh scattering light in the optical fiber; c. diving the rayleigh scattering light into two bundles to perform the Phi-OTDR data acquisition and the POTDR data acquisition; d. determining the destabilization and position thereof based on the distortion points of the Phi-OTDR data and the POTDR data. The invention also discloses an optical fiber destabilization detecting device. The technical scheme of the invention is used for monitoring and protecting theoptical cable lines, thereby greatly improving the precision and the sensitivity of the monitoring system and reducing the erroneous judgment rate and the missing report rate.

Optical fiber disturbance detection method and apparatus

An FBG dynamic strain sensing system based on a fiber ring laser configuration and the eigenvector spectrum analysis method, is proposed and demonstrated. An ultrahigh dynamic strain resolution of 3.4x10-6ne /Hz1/2is achieved.
