The NOMA principle is a general framework, and several recently proposed 5G multiple access schemes can be viewed as special cases. This survey provides an overview of the latest NOMA research and innovations as well as their applications. Thereby, the papers published in this special issue are put into the context of the existing literature. Future research challenges regarding NOMA in 5G and beyond are also discussed.

Massive access, also known as massive connectivity or massive machine-type communication (mMTC), is one of the main use cases of the fifth-generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) wireless networks. A typical application of massive access is the cellular Internet of Things (IoT). Different from conventional human-type communication, massive access aims at realizing efficient and reliable communications for a massive number of IoT devices. Hence, the main characteristics of massive access include low power, massive connectivity, and broad coverage, which require new concepts, theories, and paradigms for the design of next-generation cellular networks. This paper presents a comprehensive survey of massive access design for B5G wireless networks. Specifically, we provide a detailed review of massive access from the perspectives of theory, protocols, techniques, coverage, energy, and security. Furthermore, several future research directions and challenges are identified.

Massive Access for 5G and Beyond

A key challenge of massive MTC (mMTC), is the joint detection of device activity and decoding of data. The sparse characteristics of mMTC makes compressed sensing (CS) approaches a promising solution to the device detection problem. However, utilizing CS-based approaches for device detection along with channel estimation, and using the acquired estimates for coherent data transmission is suboptimal, especially when the goal is to convey only a few bits of data. First, we focus on the coherent transmission and demonstrate that it is possible to obtain more accurate channel state information by combining conventional estimators with CS-based techniques. Moreover, we illustrate that even simple power control techniques can enhance the device detection performance in mMTC setups. Second, we devise a new non-coherent transmission scheme for mMTC and specifically for grant-free random access. We design an algorithm that jointly detects device activity along with embedded information bits. The approach leverages elements from the approximate message passing (AMP) algorithm, and exploits the structured sparsity introduced by the non-coherent transmission scheme. Our analysis reveals that the proposed approach has superior performance compared with application of the original AMP approach.

Grant-Free Massive MTC-Enabled Massive MIMO: A Compressive Sensing Approach

Future 5th generation networks are expected to enable three key services—enhanced mobile broadband, massive machine type communications and ultra-reliable and low latency communications (URLLC). As per the 3rd generation partnership project URLLC requirements, it is expected that the reliability of one transmission of a 32 byte packet will be at least 99.999% and the latency will be at most 1 ms. This unprecedented level of reliability and latency will yield various new applications, such as smart grids, industrial automation and intelligent transport systems. In this survey we present potential future URLLC applications, and summarize the corresponding reliability and latency requirements. We provide a comprehensive discussion on physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layer techniques that enable URLLC, addressing both licensed and unlicensed bands. This paper evaluates the relevant PHY and MAC techniques for their ability to improve the reliability and reduce the latency. We identify that enabling long-term evolution to coexist in the unlicensed spectrum is also a potential enabler of URLLC in the unlicensed band, and provide numerical evaluations. Lastly, this paper discusses the potential future research directions and challenges in achieving the URLLC requirements.

Enabling Technologies for Ultra-Reliable and Low Latency Communications: From PHY and MAC Layer Perspectives

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is an emerging research topic in the future fifth generation wireless communication networks, which is expected to support massive connectivity for massive machine-type communications (mMTC). Due to the sporadic communication nature of mMTC, the grant-free transmission methodology is highly expected in uplink NOMA systems, to drastically reduce the transmission latency and signaling overhead. Exploiting the inherent sparsity nature of user activity, compressive sensing (CS) techniques have been applied for efficient multi-user detection in the uplink grant-free NOMA. In this paper, we propose a prior-information-aided adaptive subspace pursuit (PIA-ASP) algorithm to improve the multi-user detection performance. In this algorithm, a parameter evaluating the quality of the prior-information support set is introduced, in order to exploit the intrinsically temporal correlation of active user support sets in several continuous time slots adaptively. Then, to mitigate the incorrect estimation effect of the prior support quality information, a robust PIA-ASP algorithm is further proposed, which adaptively exploits the prior support based on the corresponding support quality information in a conservative way. It is noted that both of the two proposed algorithms do not require the knowledge of the user sparsity level, while most of the state-of-the-art CS-based multi-user detection algorithms usually need. Moreover, for the two proposed algorithms, the upper bound of the signal detection error and the computational complexity is derived. Simulation results demonstrate that the two proposed algorithms are capable of achieving much better performance than that of the existing CS-based multi-user detection algorithms with a similar computational complexity.

Efficient Multi-User Detection for Uplink Grant-Free NOMA: Prior-Information Aided Adaptive Compressive Sensing Perspective

One of the challenges in the design of sparse code multiple access systems is developing low-complexity detectors. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel low-complexity detector based on an edge selection approach, which remarkably reduces the computational complexity. First, the proposed detector applies adaptive Gaussian approximation to the unselected edges that have smaller modulus of the channel coefficients, on the basis of the different channel qualities. As a result, the original factor graph can be simplified. In addition, a mean and variance feedback mechanism is employed to further compensate the information loss brought by unselected edges. Simulations show that, compared with the original message passing algorithm-based detector, the computational complexity is reduced substantially with negligible bit error rate performance degradation.
