With the rapid advancement of urbanization and industrialization, the contradiction between the social economy and resources and the environment has become increasingly prominent. On the basis of limited land resources, the way to promote multi-objective comprehensive development such as economic, social development and ecological and environmental protection through structure and layout regulation, so as to maximize regional comprehensive benefits, is an important task of current land spatial planning. Our aim is to obtain land-use-change data in the study area using remote-sensing data inversion and multiple-model simulation. Based on land suitability evaluation, we predict and optimize the land use structure of the study area in 2030 and evaluate and compare ecosystem services. Based on remote-sensing images and eco-environmental data from 1985 to 2014 in the study area, land use/land cover change (LUCC) and future simulation data were obtained by using supervised classification, landscape metrics and the CA-Markov model. The ecosystem services were evaluated by the InVEST model. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method was used to evaluate the land suitability for LUCC. Finally, the LUCC in 2030 under two different scenarios, Scenario_1 (prediction) and Scenario_2 (optimization), were evaluated, and the ecosystem service functions were compared. In the last 30 years, the landscape in the study area has gradually fragmented, and the built-up land has expanded rapidly, increased by one-third, mainly at the cost of cropland, orchards and wasteland. According to the suitability evaluation, giving priority to the land use types with higher environmental requirements will ensure the study area has a higher ecosystem service value. The rapid development of urbanization has a far-reaching impact on regional LUCC. Intensive land resources need reasonable and scientific land use planning, and land use planning should be based on the suitability evaluation of land resources, which can improve the regional ecosystem service function.

Spatio-Temporal Evolution, Prediction and Optimization of LUCC Based on CA-Markov and InVEST Models: A Case Study of Mentougou District, Beijing

The dislocated development of population, land, and economy will disturb the urban system, cause ecological risk problems, and ultimately affect regional habitat and quality development. Based on social statistics and nighttime lighting data from 2000 to 2018, we used mathematical statistics and spatial analysis methods to analyze the change process of urbanization’s coupling coordination degree and ecological risk response pattern in the Yangtze River Delta. Results show that: ① From 2000 to 2018, the coupling coordination degree of urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta increased, with high values in Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou, Shanghai, Nanjing and Hangzhou regions. ② The ecological risk in the Yangtze River Delta weakened, and the vulnerability and disturbance of landscape components together constitute the spatial differentiation pattern of regional ecological risk, which presented homogeneous aggregation and heterogeneous isolation. ③ The overall ecological stress of urbanization in the Yangtze River Delta decreased. ④ The population aggregation degree, socio-economic development level and built-up area expansion trend contributed to the spatiotemporal differentiation of urbanization’s ecological risks through the synergistic effects of factor concentration and diffusion, population quality cultivation and improvement, technological progress and dispersion, industrial structure adjustment and upgrading. This study can provide a reference for regional urbanization to deal with ecological risks reasonably and achieve high-quality development.

Multi-Dimensional Urbanization Coordinated Evolution Process and Ecological Risk Response in the Yangtze River Delta

Climate change and rapid urbanization are two global processes that have significantly aggravated natural disasters, such as drought and flooding. Urbanization without resilient and sustainable planning and execution could lead to undesirable changes in landscapes and stormwater regulation capacity. These changes have exacerbated the effects of extreme climatic events with disastrous consequences in many cities worldwide. Unfortunately, the major storm in Zhengzhou, China on 20 July 2021 was one of these examples. This event provided a rare opportunity to study the key roles of green infrastructures (GI) in mitigating flooding risks in a major urban center after a devasting flood event. Using the data from high-resolution images collected via two satellites, a comprehensive study of the Jialu System in Greater Zhengzhou was conducted to systematically compare how far the river water had reached before and after the 20 July 2021 major storm in order to identify the main weak links in the city’s GI and stormwater management system. A flood inundation intensity index (FI) in the Upper (UJLR), Middle (MJLR), and Lower (LJLR) Regions of the Jialu River System was generated. Bivariate Moran’s I, a correlation coefficient between FI and landscape characteristics, was calculated and used to identify problem areas for future improvements. Our results showed that the MJLR had the severest flooding impacts. LJLR had the biggest change in how far the river water reached after flooding, ranging from 4.59 m to 706.28 m. In UJLR, the percentages of mine, crop land, and green space had the highest global bivariate Moran’s I correlation coefficients. In MJLR, the percentages of vacant land, impervious surfaces, and water body had the highest global bivariate Moran’s I correlation coefficients. In LJLR, the percentages of vacant land, water body, and crop land had the highest global bivariate Moran’s I correlation coefficients. The total percentages of both high landscape characteristics indices-high flood inundation intensity indices and low landscape characteristics indices-high flood inundation intensity indices areas are 12.96%, 13.47%, and 13.80% in UJLR, MJLR, and LJLR, respectively. These land cover composition types identified for each region can be treated as areas of primary focus. However, GeoDector Model (GDM) analyses showed that our eight variables of landscape characteristics were not independent. Hence, a more comprehensive approach integrating all eight variables is still necessary in future flood mitigation efforts.

“The 20 July 2021 Major Flood Event” in Greater Zhengzhou, China: A Case Study of Flooding Severity and Landscape Characteristics

Temporal and spatial variations of land use and the driving factors in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in the past 25 years

(1) Background. Conifers are the main plantation species in southern China, including Masson Pine (MP), Chinese fir (CF) and Chinese thuja (CT). Clarifying the suitable site conditions for these conifers is helpful for large-area afforestation, so as to manage forests to provide a higher level of ecosystem services. To achieve the research goals, we take the conifers in Hubei Province of southern China as a case study. (2) Methods. The situations of conifers, as well as environmental conditions of 448 sampling plots, were then investigated. The suitable growth environment of conifers in the studied area was determined by the maximum entropy algorithm, and the suitability spatial distribution of coniferous forests at the provincial level was also analyzed. (3) Results. The effect of the conifers suitability prediction model reached an accurate level, where AUC values of MP, CF and CT training set were 0.828, 0.856 and 0.970, respectively. Among multiple environmental factors, such as geography and climate, altitude is the most important factor affecting conifer growth. The contribution of altitude to the growth suitability of MP, CF and CT was 38.1%, 36.2% and 36.1%, respectively. Suitable areas of MP, CF and CT were 97,400 ha, 74,300 ha and 39,900 ha, accounting for 52.45%, 39.97% and 21.46% of the studied area, respectively. We concluded that the suitable site conditions of conifer plantations were 2800–5600 °C annual accumulated temperature, 40–1680 m a.s.l., and <40° slopes. (4) Conclusions. The study suggests that accurate spatial suitability evaluation should be carried out to provide sufficient support for the large-area afforestation in southern China. However, due to our data and study area limitations, further studies are needed to explore the above findings for a full set of plantation species in an extensive area of southern China.

Spatial Distribution of Precise Suitability of Plantation: A Case Study of Main Coniferous Forests in Hubei Province, China

The middle reaches of the Yangtze River region (MRYRR) are China’s first trans-regional urban agglomeration, located in the center of the Yangtze River Economic Belt. The MRYRR is an important ecological reserve, and its land cover changes are affected by both socio-economic development and geographical environment. In this paper, Landsat ETM/TM/OLI remote sensing images were used to monitor land use and landscape patterns from 1990 to 2015. Through supervised classification, land use transfer matrix, landscape pattern metrics and correlation analysis, the spatial-temporal patterns of land use change and its relationship with socio-economic in the study area were revealed. The results showed that: (1) the main land use types in the study area were cropland (CL) and forestland (FL), accounting for more than three-quarters of the study area. During the study period, built-up land (BL) increased, CL decreased, FL increased first and then decreased; (2) the BL expanded mainly by occupying CL and FL, and regional landscape pattern was gradually fragmented, with complex patch shape and increasing diversity and heterogeneity. Among them, the BL is gradually gathered, and the FL and CL are gradually fragmented; (3) in the past 25 years, the urbanization process in this region has been obvious, and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has increased by 36 times. The socioeconomic variables were positively correlated with BL, orchard (OL) and Shannon diversity index (SHID), and negatively correlated with CL, Wasteland (WL), mean patch size (MPS) and contagion size (CONTAG). The results showed that the urbanization development has a great impact on the region, and the ecological protection task is still challenging. It is necessary to protect high-quality cropland and draw a red line for ecological protection. We should strengthen the construction of ecological corridors and ecological nodes to adapt to regional sustainable development.
