The rapid uptake of mobile devices and the rising popularity of mobile applications and services pose unprecedented demands on mobile and wireless networking infrastructure. Upcoming 5G systems are evolving to support exploding mobile traffic volumes, real-time extraction of fine-grained analytics, and agile management of network resources, so as to maximize user experience. Fulfilling these tasks is challenging, as mobile environments are increasingly complex, heterogeneous, and evolving. One potential solution is to resort to advanced machine learning techniques, in order to help manage the rise in data volumes and algorithm-driven applications. The recent success of deep learning underpins new and powerful tools that tackle problems in this space. In this paper, we bridge the gap between deep learning and mobile and wireless networking research, by presenting a comprehensive survey of the crossovers between the two areas. We first briefly introduce essential background and state-of-the-art in deep learning techniques with potential applications to networking. We then discuss several techniques and platforms that facilitate the efficient deployment of deep learning onto mobile systems. Subsequently, we provide an encyclopedic review of mobile and wireless networking research based on deep learning, which we categorize by different domains. Drawing from our experience, we discuss how to tailor deep learning to mobile environments. We complete this survey by pinpointing current challenges and open future directions for research.

Deep Learning in Mobile and Wireless Networking: A Survey

An accurate and reliable Indoor Positioning System (IPS) applicable to most indoor scenarios has been sought for many years. The number of technologies, techniques, and approaches in general used in IPS proposals is remarkable. Such diversity, coupled with the lack of strict and verifiable evaluations, leads to difficulties for appreciating the true value of most proposals. This paper provides a meta-review that performed a comprehensive compilation of 62 survey papers in the area of indoor positioning. The paper provides the reader with an introduction to IPS and the different technologies, techniques, and some methods commonly employed. The introduction is supported by consensus found in the selected surveys and referenced using them. Thus, the meta-review allows the reader to inspect the IPS current state at a glance and serve as a guide for the reader to easily find further details on each technology used in IPS. The analyses of the meta-review contributed with insights on the abundance and academic significance of published IPS proposals using the criterion of the number of citations. Moreover, 75 works are identified as relevant works in the research topic from a selection of about 4000 works cited in the analyzed surveys.

A Meta-Review of Indoor Positioning Systems.

This study proposes a mobile positioning method that adopts recurrent neural network algorithms to analyze the received signal strength indications from heterogeneous networks (e.g., cellular networks and Wi-Fi networks) for estimating the locations of mobile stations. The recurrent neural networks with multiple consecutive timestamps can be applied to extract the features of time series data for the improvement of location estimation. In practical experimental environments, there are 4525 records, 59 different base stations, and 582 different Wi-Fi access points detected in Fuzhou University in China. The lower location errors can be obtained by the recurrent neural networks with multiple consecutive timestamps (e.g., two timestamps and three timestamps); from the experimental results, it can be observed that the average error of location estimation was 9.19 m by the proposed mobile positioning method with two timestamps.

A Mobile Positioning Method Based on Deep Learning Techniques

In the era of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0, the indoor usage of smart devices is expected to increase, thereby making their location information more important. Based on various practical issues related to large delays, high design cost, and limited performance, conventional localization techniques are not practical for indoor IoT applications. In recent years, many researchers have proposed a wide range of machine learning (ML)-based indoor localization approaches using Wi-Fi received signal strength indicator (RSSI) fingerprints. This survey attempts to provide a summarized investigation of ML-based Wi-Fi RSSI fingerprinting schemes, including data preprocessing, data augmentation, ML prediction models for indoor localization, and postprocessing in ML, and compare their performance. Any ML-based study is heavily reliant on datasets. Therefore, we dedicate a significant portion of this survey to the discussion of dataset collection and open-source datasets. To provide good direction for future research, we discuss the current challenges and potential solutions related to ML-based indoor localization systems.

Machine Learning Based Indoor Localization Using Wi-Fi RSSI Fingerprints: An Overview

Nowadays, location-based services, which include services to identify the location of a person or an object, have many uses in social life. Though traditional GPS positioning can provide high quality positioning services in outdoor environments, due to the shielding of buildings and the interference of indoor environments, researchers and enterprises have paid more attention to how to perform high precision indoor positioning. There are many indoor positioning technologies, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, UWB and RFID. RFID positioning technology is favored by researchers because of its lower cost and higher accuracy. One of the methods that is applied to indoor positioning is the LANDMARC algorithm, which uses RFID tags and readers to implement an Indoor Positioning System (IPS). However, the accuracy of the LANDMARC positioning algorithm relies on the density of reference tags and the performance of RFID readers. In this paper, we introduce the weighted path length and support vector regression algorithm to improve the positioning precision of LANDMARC. The results show that the proposed algorithm is effective.

An RFID Indoor Positioning Algorithm Based on Support Vector Regression

The widely applied location-based services require a high standard for positioning technology. Currently, outdoor positioning has been a great success; however, indoor positioning technologies are in the early stages of development. Therefore, this paper provides an overview of indoor fingerprint positioning based on Wi-Fi. First, some indoor positioning technologies, especially the Wi-Fi fingerprint indoor positioning technology, are introduced and discussed. Second, some evaluation metrics and influence factors of indoor fingerprint positioning technologies based on Wi-Fi are introduced. Third, methods and algorithms of fingerprint indoor positioning technologies are analyzed, classified, and discussed. Fourth, some widely used assistive positioning technologies are described. Finally, conclusions are drawn and future possible research interests are discussed. It is hoped that this research will serve as a stepping stone for those interested in advancing indoor positioning.

Indoor Fingerprint Positioning Based on Wi-Fi: An Overview

Currently, ubiquitous smartphones embedded with various sensors provide a convenient way to collect raw sequence data. These data bridges the gap between human activity and multiple sensors. Human activity recognition has been widely used in quite a lot of aspects in our daily life, such as medical security, personal safety, living assistance and so on.,To provide an overview, the authors survey and summarize some important technologies and involved key issues of human activity recognition, including activity categorization, feature engineering as well as typical algorithms presented in recent years. In this paper, the authors first introduce the character of embedded sensors and dsiscuss their features, as well as survey some data labeling strategies to get ground truth label. Then, following the process of human activity recognition, the authors discuss the methods and techniques of raw data preprocessing and feature extraction, and summarize some popular algorithms used in model training and activity recognizing. Third, they introduce some interesting application scenarios of human activity recognition and provide some available data sets as ground truth data to validate proposed algorithms.,The authors summarize their viewpoints on human activity recognition, discuss the main challenges and point out some potential research directions.,It is hoped that this work will serve as the steppingstone for those interested in advancing human activity recognition.
