Feature extraction is a significant method to extract the useful information which is hidden in surface electromyography (EMG) signal and to remove the unwanted part and interferences. To be successful in classification of the EMG signal, selection of a feature vector ought to be carefully considered. However, numerous studies of the EMG signal classification have used a feature set that have contained a number of redundant features. In this study, most complete and up-to-date thirty-seven time domain and frequency domain features have been proposed to be studied their properties. The results, which were verified by scatter plot of features, statistical analysis and classifier, indicated that most time domain features are superfluity and redundancy. They can be grouped according to mathematical property and information into four main types: energy and complexity, frequency, prediction model, and time-dependence. On the other hand, all frequency domain features are calculated based on statistical parameters of EMG power spectral density. Its performance in class separability viewpoint is not suitable for EMG recognition system. Recommendation of features to avoid the usage of redundant features for classifier in EMG signal classification applications is also proposed in this study.

Feature reduction and selection for EMG signal classification

Fuzzy entropy (FuzzyEn), a new measure of time series regularity, was proposed and applied to the characterization of surface electromyography (EMG) signals. Similar to the two existing related measures ApEn and SampEn, FuzzyEn is the negative natural logarithm of the conditional probability that two vectors similar for m points remain similar for the next m+1 points. Importing the concept of fuzzy sets, vectors' similarity is fuzzily defined in FuzzyEn on the basis of exponential function and their shapes. Besides possessing the good properties of SampEn superior to ApEn, FuzzyEn also succeeds in giving the entropy definition in the case of small parameters. Its performance on characterizing surface EMG signals, as well as independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) random numbers and periodical sinusoidal signals, shows that FuzzyEn can more efficiently measure the regularity of time series. The method introduced here can also be applied to other noisy physiological signals with relatively short datasets.

Characterization of Surface EMG Signal Based on Fuzzy Entropy

Symplectic geometry mode decomposition and its application to rotating machinery compound fault diagnosis

In the present contribution, a complexity measure is proposed to assess surface electromyography (EMG) in the study of muscle fatigue during sustained, isometric muscle contractions. Approximate entropy (ApEn) is believed to provide quantitative information about the complexity of experimental data that is often corrupted with noise, short data length, and in many cases, has inherent dynamics that exhibit both deterministic and stochastic behaviors. We developed an improved ApEn measure, i.e., fuzzy approximate entropy (fApEn), which utilizes the fuzzy membership function to define the vectors’ similarity. Tests were conducted on independent, identically distributed (i.i.d.) Gaussian and uniform noises, a chirp signal, MIX processes, Rossler equation, and Henon map. Compared with the standard ApEn, the fApEn showed better monotonicity, relative consistency, and more robustness to noise when characterizing signals with different complexities. Performance analysis on experimental EMG signals demonstrated that the fApEn significantly decreased during the development of muscle fatigue, which is a similar trend to that of the mean frequency (MNF) of the EMG signal, while the standard ApEn failed to detect this change. Moreover, fApEn of EMG demonstrated a better robustness to the length of the analysis window in comparison with the MNF of EMG. The results suggest that the fApEn of an EMG signal may potentially become a new reliable method for muscle fatigue assessment and be applicable to other short noisy physiological signal analysis.

Fuzzy Approximate Entropy Analysis of Chaotic and Natural Complex Systems: Detecting Muscle Fatigue Using Electromyography Signals

Electromyography (EMG) signals are the electrical manifestations of muscle contractions. EMG signals may be weak or at a low level when there is only a small movement in the major corresponding muscle group or when there is a strong movement in the minor corresponding muscle group. Moreover, in a single-channel EMG classification identifying the signals may be difficult. However, weak and single-channel EMG control systems offer a very convenient way of controlling human-computer interfaces (HCIs). Identifying upper-limb movements using a single-channel surface EMG also has a number of rehabilitation and HCI applications. The fractal analysis method, known as detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA), has been suggested for the identification of low-level muscle activations. This study found that DFA performs better in the classification of EMG signals from bifunctional movements of low-level and equal power as compared to other successful and commonly used features based on magnitude and other fractal techniques.

A method of embedding dimension estimation based on symplectic geometry

For nonlinear dynamic analysis of the experiment data, one often uses SVD decomposition to reconstruct embedding dimension of attractor because of its simpleness. However, it is hardly for singular value decomposition (SVD) decomposition to get good results in the attractor reconstruction of the experiment data. For this, symplectic geometry method is proposed to estimate embedding dimension of reconstruction attractor in this paper. We illustrate the feasibility of this method and give the embedding dimension of the action surface EMG signal.
