Functional Nanomaterials for Phototherapies of Cancer

: The unpolarized absorption and circular dichroism spectra of the fundamental vibrational transitions of the chiral molecule, 4-methyl-2-oxetanone, are calculated ab initio. Harmonic force fields are obtained using Density Functional Theory (DFT), MP2, and SCF methodologies and a 5S4P2D/3S2P (TZ2P) basis set. DFT calculations use the Local Spin Density Approximation (LSDA), BLYP, and Becke3LYP (B3LYP) density functionals. Mid-IR spectra predicted using LSDA, BLYP, and B3LYP force fields are of significantly different quality, the B3LYP force field yielding spectra in clearly superior, and overall excellent, agreement with experiment. The MP2 force field yields spectra in slightly worse agreement with experiment than the B3LYP force field. The SCF force field yields spectra in poor agreement with experiment.The basis set dependence of B3LYP force fields is also explored: the 6-31G* and TZ2P basis sets give very similar results while the 3-21G basis set yields spectra in substantially worse agreements with experiment. jg

Ab initio calculation of vibrational absorption and circular dichroism spectra using density functional force fields

A new generation of photothermal therapeutic agents based on biopolymer dopamine-melanin colloidal nanospheres is described. Benefitting from their naturally wide distribution in humans, dopamine-melanin colloidal nanospheres exhibit robust biocompatibility and biodegradability, and provide up to 40% photothermal conversion efficiency. After administration, they can efficiently damage tumors at low power density and short irradiation time without damaging healthy tissues.

Dopamine‐Melanin Colloidal Nanospheres: An Efficient Near‐Infrared Photothermal Therapeutic Agent for In Vivo Cancer Therapy

Gold nanorods have been receiving extensive attention owing to their extremely attractive applications in biomedical technologies, plasmon-enhanced spectroscopies, and optical and optoelectronic devices. The growth methods and plasmonic properties of Au nanorods have therefore been intensively studied. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of the flourishing field of Au nanorods in the past five years. We will focus mainly on the approaches for the growth, shape and size tuning, functionalization, and assembly of Au nanorods, as well as the methods for the preparation of their hybrid structures. The plasmonic properties and the associated applications of Au nanorods will also be discussed in detail.

Gold nanorods and their plasmonic properties

Supramolecular materials, dynamic materials by nature, are defined as materials whose components are bridged via reversible connections and undergo spontaneous and continuous assembly/disassembly processes under specific conditions. On account of the dynamic and reversible nature of noncovalent interactions, supramolecular polymers have the ability to adapt to their environment and possess a wide range of intriguing properties, such as degradability, shape-memory, and self-healing, making them unique candidates for supramolecular materials. In this critical review, we address recent developments in supramolecular polymeric materials, which can respond to appropriate external stimuli at the fundamental level due to the existence of noncovalent interactions of the building blocks.

A Dual-Responsive Supramolecular Polymer Gel Formed by Crown Ether Based Molecular Recognition

A simple seed-mediated growth route is developed to fabricate monodisperse, uniform superparamagnetic Fe(3)O(4) core/gold shell structured nanocomposites with tunable sizes and optical properties, in which gold seed formation and attachment onto the core surface via S-Au covalent bonding proceeds almost simultaneously in the one-pot synthesis. The as-prepared nanocomposite is demonstrated to have a great potential for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided, focused photothermal tumor therapy under near-IR laser radiation.

Facile Synthesis of Monodisperse Superparamagnetic Fe3O4 Core@hybrid@Au Shell Nanocomposite for Bimodal Imaging and Photothermal Therapy

Synthesis and characterization of titanium(IV) complexes bearing monoanionic [O-NX] (X = O, S, Se) tridentate ligands and their behaviors in ethylene homo- and copolymerizaton with 1-hexene

Novel bridged dinuclear diimine nickel and palladium complexes catalyzed the vinyl addition polymerization of norbornene at a single active site with high activity. The latter exhibited higher activity thin the former Smaller substituents around the imido group in the ligand were more favorable for increasing the activity than bulkier ones. The polynorbornenes were all noncrystalline but had short-range older and their glass transition temperature, T g , ranged from 270 to 400°C. Furthermore, the random copolymerization of norbornene and styrene was catalyzed by the bridged dinucleqr diimine nickel complex with MAO (methylaluminoxane). Gel permeation chromatography (GPC), FTIR and 1 H NMR spectroscopies, wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) indicated that the copolymers are true copolymers. The reactivity ratios were r styrene = 0.281, r norbornen = 18.7. The packing density, thermostability and the glass transition temperatures of copolymers are increased relative to polystyrene. The solubility and processability of the copolymers are improved relative to polynorbornene.
