Until now, a number of cutting tools and cutting methods have been developed for improving the machining processes, however they have some difficulties resulting from tool wear and failure. This study considers on-line monitoring of tool wear and failure in metal cutting processes. The proposed on-line monitoring system consists of two parts: the one is the on-line data acquisition system with sensors and a DSP board through LabView and a web server, and the other is the prediction of tool wear and failure using an ART2 neural network. The system is installed at an on-site machine tool to monitor high speed steel (HSS) tools for cutting titanium alloys. A number of experiments are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system, and the results show that the proposed system can be applied to monitoring of the tool wear and failure.

Real time monitoring system for prediction of tool wear and failure in machining processes using ART2

A MOSFET’s gate driver based on magnetic coupling is investigated. The gate driver can meet the demands in applications for wide range of duty cycles and high frequency. Fully galvanic isolation can be realized, and no auxiliary supply is needed. The driver is insensitive to the leakage inductor of the isolated transformer. No gate resistor is needed to damp the oscillation, and thus the peak output current of the gate driver can be improved. Design of the driving transformer can also be made more flexible, which helps to improve the isolation voltage between the power stage and the control electronics, and aids to enhance the electromagnetic compatibility. The driver’s operation principle is analyzed, and the design method for its key parameters is presented. The performance analysis is validated via experiment. The disadvantages of the traditional magnetic coupling and optical coupling have been conquered through the investigated circuit.

Detection of human walking motion based on measurement system of current generated by electrostatic induction

Classification of snowflakes is important in the investigation of the growth process of snow particles and radar meteorology, etc. This paper proposes an automatic image processing method for classification of falling snow particles. A side view of natural falling snow particles was photographed by IEEE1394 camera (1280 × 960 pixel) with a shutter speed of 1/10000 s. To obtain shape parameters, both a binary and a gray-level image of each particle were recorded continuously. Each particle was classified into a graupel or a snowflake by statistical classification procedure using image features. The proposed method has been successfully tested in snowfall, obtaining the percentages of snowflakes and graupels at 1 min interval.

Shape classification of snow particle into snowflake and graupel using image processing

In this study, an effective noncontact technique for the detection of human walking motion is proposed. The technique involves the measurement of the electrostatic induction current flowing through a measurement electrode. Further, an occurrence model for the electrostatic induction current generated due to a change in the electric potential of the human body is proposed. This model effectively explains the behavior of the waveform of the electrostatic induction current flowing through the measurement electrode. The obtained results show that the degree of fastening of a subject's foot is directly reflected in the electrostatic induction current generated due to walking motion. This suggests that subtle differences in the walking style can be detected using the proposed technique.

Design and build up a new on-line digital UPS based on boost topological structure with a new kind of single-chip computer, STC12C5412AD, realizing sine wave and square wave output, and shifting among 50Hz, 60 Hz, and 400Hz of the supply for adopting into different industrial standards and applications. Such UPS system contains the module of intelligent charging from storage battery and thorough security functions, characterized by the output of un-interruption and high stability, low distortion, free of interference, low cost and multi-function.
