Visible light-responsive photocatalytic technology holds great potential in water treatment to enhance purification efficiency, as well as to augment water supply through the safe usage of unconventional water sources. This review summarizes the recent progress in the design and fabrication of visible light-responsive photocatalysts via various synthetic strategies, including the modification of traditional photocatalysts by doping, dye sensitization, or by forming a heterostructure, coupled with π-conjugated architecture, as well as the great efforts made within the exploration of novel visible light-responsive photocatalysts. Background information on the fundamentals of heterogeneous photocatalysis, the pathways of visible light-responsive photocatalysis, and the unique features of visible light-responsive photocatalysts are presented. The photocatalytic properties of the resulting visible light-responsive photocatalysts are also covered in relation to the water treatment, i.e., regarding the photocatalytic degradation of organic compounds and inorganic pollutants, as well as photocatalytic disinfection. Finally, this review concludes with a summary and perspectives on the current challenges faced and new directions in this emerging area of research.

Recent developments in heterogeneous photocatalytic water treatment using visible light-responsive photocatalysts: a review

Discharging dye contaminants into water is a major concern around the world. Among a variety of methods to treat dye-contaminated water, photocatalytic degradation has gained attention as a tool for treating the colored water. Herein, we review the recent advancements in photocatalysis for dye degradation in industrial effluents by categorizing photocatalyst materials into three generations. First generation photocatalysts are composed of single-component materials (e.g., TiO2, ZnO, and CdS), while second generation photocatalysts are composed of multiple components in a suspension (e.g., WO3/NiWO4, BiOI/ZnTiO3, and C3N4/Ag3VO4). Photocatalysts immobilized on solid substrates are regarded as third generation materials (e.g., FTO/WO3-ZnO, Steel/TiO2-WO3, and Glass/P-TiO2). Photocatalytic degradation mechanisms, factors affecting the dye degradation, and the lesser-debated uncertainties related to the photocatalysis are also discussed to offer better insights into environmental applications. Furthermore, quantum yields of different photocatalysts are calculated, and a performance evaluation method is proposed to compare photocatalyst systems for dye degradation. Finally, we discuss the present limitations of photocatalytic dye degradation for field applications and the future of the technology.

Photocatalysts for degradation of dyes in industrial effluents: Opportunities and challenges

Co3O4 nanoparticles decorated Ag3PO4 tetrapods as an efficient visible-light-driven heterojunction photocatalyst

The utilization of solar energy based on semiconductor photocatalysts for pollutant removal and environmental remediation has become a research hot spot and attracted great attention. In this study, a novel ternary BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized via simple wet impregnation of Cu2O particles coupled with a subsequent photo-reduction pathway for the deposition of metallic Ag on the surface of BiVO4. The resulting BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O photocatalyst was used for the degradation of tetracycline (TC) under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm). Results showed that the coating contents of the Cu2O and Ag particles presented a great effect on the eventual photocatalytic activity of the photocatalysts, and the optimum coating contents of Cu2O and Ag were obtained with their mass ratios of 3% and 2%, respectively. Under optimum conditions, nearly 91.22% TC removal efficiency was obtained based on ternary BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O nanocomposites, higher than that of pure BiVO4 (42.9%) and binary BiVO4/Cu2O (65.17%) and BiVO4/Ag (72.63%) nanocomposites. Meanwhile, the enhanced total organic carbon (TOC) removal efficiency also indicated the excellent photocatalytic degradation ability of the BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O nanocomposites. As for their practical application, the effects of initial TC concentration, various supporting electrolytes and different irradiation conditions were investigated in detail. Three-dimensional excitation–emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (3D EEMs) was used to show the by-products of TC molecule degradation. Cycling experiments indicated the high stability of the as-prepared photocatalysts. Furthermore, the results obtained from radical trapping experiments and ESR measurements suggested that the photocatalytic degradation of TC in the BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O based photocatalytic system was the joint action of the photogenerated holes (h+), superoxide radical (˙O2−) and hydroxyl radical (˙OH). The enhanced photocatalytic activity of BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O was attributed to the synergistic effect of Cu2O, Ag and BiVO4, especially the surface plasmon resonance effect and the established local electric field brought about by metallic Ag. Additionally, to deeply understand the reaction mechanism, a dual Z-scheme charge transfer pathway has been proposed.

Plasmonic resonance excited dual Z-scheme BiVO4/Ag/Cu2O nanocomposite: synthesis and mechanism for enhanced photocatalytic performance in recalcitrant antibiotic degradation

Toward designing semiconductor-semiconductor heterojunctions for photocatalytic applications

A new strategy via coupling a polyol route with an oxidation process has been developed to successfully synthesize p–n junction CuO/BiVO4 heterogeneous nanostructures. The experimental results reveal that the as-prepared p–n junction CuO/BiVO4 heterogeneous nanostructures exhibit much higher visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity for the degradation of model dye rhodamine B (RhB) than the pure BiVO4 nanocrystals. The photocatalytic degradation rate (C/C0) of the RhB for p–n junction CuO/BiVO4 heterogeneous nanostructures is about two times higher than that of pure BiVO4 nanocrystals. The enhanced photocatalytic efficiency is attributed to a large number of p–n junctions in CuO/BiVO4 heterogeneous nanostructures, which effectively reduces the recombination of electrons and holes by charge transfer from n-type BiVO4 to the attached p-type CuO nanoparticles. This work not only provides an efficient route to enhance the visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity of BiVO4, but also offers a new strategy for fabricating p–n junction heterogeneous nanostructure photocatalysts, which are expected to show considerable potential application in solar-driven wastewater treatment and water splitting.
