Accordingly, a plasma display device can be realized which has stability and efficiency of a micro discharge. Gas breakdown in large scale systems has been widely studied and is reasonably well understood. Deviations from the well-known Paschen law, however, have been reported in microgaps. One possible mechanism responsible for these deviations is the increase of the secondary electron emission yield due to the quantum tunnelling of electrons from the metal electrodes to the gas phase. The high electric fields obtained in small gaps combined with the lowering of the potential barrier seen by the electrons in the cathode as an ion approaches lead to the onset of ion-enhanced field emissions. Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo simulations including ion-enhanced field emission have been performed to evaluate the importance of these mechanisms in the discharge breakdown. Deviations from the Paschen curve in gaps smaller than 5 µm can be explained based on this mechanism.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high picture quality, more specifically high definition, gradation and brightness, enhanced display quality, and high contrast. SOLUTION: An electrode driving circuit performs interlaced scanning so that the odd- and even-numbered lines of surface-discharge electrode spacings L1 to L8 have their maintaining pulse voltage waveforms set in opposite phase to each other. Thus, when either the odd- or even-numbered line is displayed, the voltage applied to the other electrode spacing becomes zero, eliminating the need to provide bulkheads over the surface-discharge electrodes. As the surface-discharge electrodes, an X (X1 to X5) electrode is placed on each side of a Y (Y1 to Y4) electrode, and the display line of an odd-numbered frame is set between the Y electrode and the X electrode on one side and supplied with a maintaining pulse while the display line of an even- numbered frame is set between the Y electrode and the X electrode on the other side and supplied with a maintaining pulse. Blind lines are set at every other spacing between the surface-discharge electrodes, and at the blind lines, light emitted from a discharge is blocked or external light is absorbed. A plurality of address electrodes are arranged on one line of picture elements and are selectively connected to a pad thereon so that a plurality of the lines can be selected simultaneously.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the driving voltage margin at the time of driving a plasma display panel by applying the narrow width pulse as an eliminating pulse for eliminating the only cell lighted in the last sub field for elimination discharge. SOLUTION: Full surface writing discharge is not performed in a sub field sFn+1, and the elimination pulse of the narrow width pulse having 2 μs or less of pulse width is applied to an X electrode so as to eliminate a wall charge. The narrow width pulse concludes the apply of the pulse voltage immediately after forming discharge, and almost of the charged particles generated at the time of discharge are left in a discharging cell space, and attracted to the wall charge on a panel dielectric layer by the electrostatic force, and connected again on the wall surface so as to be eliminated. Opposite electrode electrical potential during the maintenance discharge period of a three-electrode structure panel is set at an intermediate value of an electrical potential between the maintenance discharge electrodes so as to stabilize the operation of the panel. With this structure, even at the time of discharge for eliminating the narrow width pulse having a pulse width at 2 μs or less, the opposite electrode is maintained at a positive electrode electrical potential during the maintenance discharge period.

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce power consumption by providing two routes of power recovering circuits capable of efficient power recoveries even as to an X electrode in one pair of electrodes in which a sustainance discharge operation is performed. SOLUTION: The driving circuit and the power recovering circuit of common electrodes side are divided into two routes of a recovering route XVH and an impressing route XLG and inductance elements 64, 65 are respectively provided in the routes. The inductance elements 64, 65 respectively form resonance circuits with a panel capacitance Cp. Since the power recovering circuit is separated into the recovering route XVH and the impressing route XLG in such a way, parasitic capacitances of transistors constituting switches SW1, SW2 do not affect to the switching speeds of different routes and a capacitance affecting to the switching speed of a route is only a parasitic capacitance constituting the switch of the route. Thus, the influence of the parasitic capacitance can be reduced by half and the switching speed is enhanced and the potential of the X electrode is sufficiently raised and lowered and then power loss is reduced.
