"Space—the final frontier." This preamble to a well-known television series captures the challenge encountered not only in space travel adventures, but also in the field of porous materials, which aims to control the size, shape and uniformity of the porous space and the atoms and molecules that define it. The past decade has seen significant advances in the ability to fabricate new porous solids with ordered structures from a wide range of different materials. This has resulted in materials with unusual properties and broadened their application range beyond the traditional use as catalysts and adsorbents. In fact, porous materials now seem set to contribute to developments in areas ranging from microelectronics to medical diagnosis.

Advanced Nanoarchitectures for Solar Photocatalytic Applications

In this review, the progress made in the last ten years concerning the synthesis of porous carbon materials is summarized. Porous carbon materials with various pore sizes and pore structures have been synthesized using several different routes. Microporous activated carbons have been synthesized through the activation process. Ordered microporous carbon materials have been synthesized using zeolites as templates. Mesoporous carbons with a disordered pore structure have been synthesized using various methods, including catalytic activation using metal species, carbonization of polymer/polymer blends, carbonization of organic aerogels, and template synthesis using silica nanoparticles. Ordered mesoporous carbons with various pore structures have been synthesized using mesoporous silica materials such as MCM-48, HMS, SBA-15, MCF, and MSU-X as templates. Ordered mesoporous carbons with graphitic pore walls have been synthesized using soft-carbon sources that can be converted to highly ordered graphite at high temperature. Hierarchically ordered mesoporous carbon materials have been synthesized using various designed silica templates. Some of these mesoporous carbon materials have successfully been used as adsorbents for bulky pollutants, as electrodes for supercapacitors and fuel cells, and as hosts for enzyme immobilization. Ordered macroporous carbon materials have been synthesized using colloidal crystals as templates. One-dimensional carbon nanostructured materials have been fabricated using anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) as a template.

A review on fundamentals and applications of electrophoretic deposition (EPD)

Y2O3 nanorods were prepared via a hydrothermal method. A series of Sr-modified Y2O3 nanorods (Sr–Y2O3–NR) with a Sr/Y molar ratio of 0.02–0.06 were synthesized by an impregnation method, and studied with respect to their performance in the oxidative coupling of methane (OCM). The structural and physicochemical properties of these catalysts were characterized by means of XRD, N2 adsorption, SEM, TEM, XPS, O2-TPD and CO2-TPD. Y2O3 nanorods exhibit higher CH4 conversion and C2–C3 selectivity relative to Y2O3 nanoparticles, which could link with the fact that Y2O3 nanorods predominantly expose (440) and (222) planes. The addition of a small amount of Sr to Y2O3 nanorods enhances the activation of oxygen, the ratio of (O−  + O2−)/O2− and amount of moderate basic sites for the Sr–Y2O3-NR catalysts, thus promoting the OCM performance. The best 0.04Sr–Y2O3-NR catalyst with a Sr/Y molar ratio of 0.04 can give a 23.0% CH4 conversion with 50.2% C2–C3 selectivity at 650 °C. We found that the C2–C3 yield achieved on the Y2O3-based catalysts correlated well with the amount of moderate basic sites present on the catalysts.

Oxidative coupling of methane over Y2O3 and Sr–Y2O3 nanorods

A novel procedure was developed to prepare nickel oxide supported silica pillared zirconium phosphates whose surface areas and d-spacings are 125-198 m2/g and 2.1-2.3 nm respectively, whereas the samples prepared by conventional method only have surface areas less than 20 m2/g and d-spacings 1.8 nm. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) indicated that the materials obtained by the new method have better nickel oxide dispersion than those obtained by the conventional method.
