Journal ArticleDOI
Do the short helices exist in the nematic TB phase
Ewa Gorecka,Mirosław Salamończyk,Anna Zep,Damian Pociecha,Christopher J. Welch,Ziauddin Ahmed,Georg H. Mehl +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the formation of arrays of focal conic defects (FCDs) was studied in the twist-bend nematic, Ntb, phase, and some of the focal conics exhibit submicron internal structure with 8nm periodicity, which is very close to that found in the crystalline phase of the material.

Do the short helices exist in the nematic TB phase
Ewa Gorecka,Mirosław Salamończyk,Anna Zep,Damian Pociecha,Christopher J. Welch,Ziauddin Ahmed,Georg H. Mehl +6 more
TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that some of the focal conics show submicron internal structure with 8 nm periodicity, which is very close to that found in the crystalline phase of the material, suggesting surface freezing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Molecular organization in the twist-bend nematic phase by resonant X-ray scattering at the Se K-edge and by SAXS, WAXS and GIXRD
Warren D. Stevenson,Ziauddin Ahmed,Xiangbing Zeng,Christopher J. Welch,Goran Ungar,Goran Ungar,Georg H. Mehl +6 more
TL;DR: It is proposed that on further heating their low bend angle allows the transition to the normal nematic phase, where the molecules can freely move longitudinally, without the need to perform screw-like motion as in the Ntb phase.

Molecular organization in the twist-bend nematic phase by resonant X-ray scattering at the Se K-edge and by SAXS, WAXS and GIXRD.
Warren D. Stevenson,Ziauddin Ahmed,Xiangbing Zeng,Christopher J. Welch,Goran Ungar,Goran Ungar,Georg H. Mehl +6 more
TL;DR: In this article, the twist-bend nematic phase (Ntb) was studied by the resonant scattering of hard X-rays and by conventional small and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS, WAXS).
Journal ArticleDOI
Mesophase structure and behaviour in bulk and restricted geometry of a dimeric compound exhibiting a nematic-nematic transition.
Nerea Sebastián,Maria-Gabriela Tamba,Ralf Stannarius,M. R. de la Fuente,Mirosław Salamończyk,Greta Cukrov,J. T. Gleeson,S. Sprunt,Antal Jakli,Christopher J. Welch,Ziauddin Ahmed,Georg H. Mehl,Alexey Eremin +12 more
TL;DR: The higher temperature nematic phase was found to exhibit an anomaly of the bend elastic constant similar to that of the dimers with N-Ntb phase sequence, and the physical properties of the low-temperature nematics phase are similar to those of the known Ntb materials.
