This chapter explores the ecology of human development, those forces in the person's environment that affect and influence development. Urie Bronfenbrenner's model of the human ecosystem guides the discussion, making connections between children in families and in communities and the larger society that surrounds them. The human ecosystem model is much like the study of the natural ecology, focusing on the interactions between subjects at various levels of the environment as they affect each other. The interaction between individual and environment forms the basis of an ecological approach to human development. This view sees the process of development as the expansion of the child's conception of the world and the child's ability to act on that world. Risks to development can come from both direct threats and the absence of opportunities for development. Sociocultural risk refers to the impoverishment in the child's world of essential experiences and relationships.

The Ecology of Human Development

In recent years, problematic gaming behavior has been a phenomenon of growing interest and in need of further empirical research worldwide. Due to a lack of research into problematic gaming behavior in Finland, this study aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the Problematic Online Gaming Questionnaire (POGQ). Data collection was carried out in two junior high schools by using an online survey administered during the school class. A convenience sample of 560 adolescents completed a Finnish version of the POGQ along with the questions relating to socio-demographic and gaming behavior variables. The final analytical sample consisted of 465 gamers (37.2% females). Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) demonstrated appropriate psychometric properties for the scale. Inter-item association across subscales of POGQ analyzed by using Cronbach’s alpha appeared to be satisfactory. Moderate positive correlations were found between time spent on games and problematic gaming behavior. The proportion of adolescents exhibiting problematic gaming behavior was 0.9% of the participants. In conclusion, these results demonstrated the suitability of the POGQ, in its Finnish version, for the assessment of problematic gaming behavior among adolescents.

Psychometric Properties of the Problematic Gaming Questionnaire Used to Assess Finnish Adolescents

Regular physical activity plays an important role in the healthy life. However, excessive exercising might lead to addictive behavior. Exercise dependence (ED) is an extreme commitment to sports that was identified as a behavioral addiction. The objective of the present study is to explore the prevalence of ED in a sample of fitness center users (n=1743) recruited from 17 fitness and welness centers in Budapest. A questonnaire-based survey was carried out to measure ED. Two standardized scales, the Exercise Dependence Scale (EDS) and the Exercise addiction Inventory were used. Results revealed thet 2,2% (on EDS) and 7% (on EAI) of subjects belonged to the dependent group and 69,3% (on EDS) and 76,5% (on EAI) showed ED-related symptoms. It is surmised that due to their sport activities, these groups are at elevated risk for ED. Moreover, younger people with decreased self-esteem tend to have higher likehood and to have problems with excessive sport behaviour. Therefore it is important to raise the awareness of the harmful and risky patterns of exercise behaviour. The here adopted two instruments, EDS and EAI, might be utilized for to early detection of ED and prevention of the disorder.
