A Sogdian Colony in Inner Mongolia
01 Jan 1952 - T'oung Pao

The men of Sogdiana, says the New T'ang History, "have gone wherever profit is to be found". 1) Pre-eminently traders, but also carriers of arts and crafts and of new religions, they travelled and settled not only along the trade routes of Central Asia but also deep in the interior of China and among the nomads of the steppes. Much of this, for instance their important civilizing influence among the Uigurs, is already known. What does not seem to be known at all in the west, and only very imperfectly among Far Eastern scholars 2), is the part they played among the Northern Turks who preceded the Uigurs. Later these partially Turkicized Sogdians formed a colony on the northern Chinese frontier whose unexpected and fascinating story I propose to tell. When the Turks (T'u-chiieh) abruptly appeared at the middle of the sixth century, destroyed the power of the Jou-jan, and went on with the co-operation of the Persians to wipe out the read more read less

Constructing lineages and inventing traditions through exemplary figures in early china

One major obstacle to understanding the early history of China is the still-prevalent notion that discrete schools of thought contended in the Warring States and Han periods, and that these schools of thought were text-centered. 2 A second is the propensity to conflate quite separate accounts of the same events, institutions, concepts, and taxonomies, for the purpose of devising a neater record. Some historians of early China, recognizing these obstacles, have sensed that the word jia 家 does not mean only “schools” or “scholastic lineages” (as it is typically translated). Still more argue against the notion of a China that is homogeneous and unchanging. A majority, however, continue to treat the terms “Ru” and “Dao” as direct and unproblematic references to two scholastic “isms,” Confucianism and Daoism, and to ignore discrepancies among the rhetorical constructions in the early sources.3 This essay aims read more read less

Cosmos and Computation in Early Chinese Mathematical Astronomy

The usual description of Chinese mathematical astronomy as a fundamentally practical, empirical collection of techniques reflects not national character but a conscious choice at a certain point in history. The two great systems of the first century A.D. were necessarily founded upon and greatly conditioned by philosophical assumptions about the simple cyclical character of the celestial motions. Astronomers were forced to incorporate mediocre prediction methods for lunar eclipses and planetary motions, which their postulates were too crude to fit. Techniques of very high accuracy could have been discovered and used with no more sophisticated mathematics, but they could not have been assimilated to the formal character of Chinese astronomy as a whole. The dilemma was resolved over the next few centuries, not by astronomers' substituting new assumptions more conformable to the complexity of the phenomena, but by their becoming indifferent toward cosmology. read more read less

Notes On the Relations and Trade of China With the Eastern Archipelago and the Coast of the Indian Ocean During the Fourteenth Century

The trade of China with the countries of southern Asia and the islands of the Eastern Archipelago reached its greatest extension during the southern Sung dynasty, in the 11th and 12th cenlturies. The imports into China in this trade consisted of two distinct categories of goods, the one manufactured textile fabrics, (mostly of cotton), spices and drugs, and the other, and by far the most valuable intrinsically, jewels anid semi-precious substances, such as ivory, rhinoceros horn, ebony, amber, coral and the like, and various aromatic products and perfumes, used either in the preparation of incense or for perfuming the body. During the earlier part of the Sung dynasty the Government used its best efforts to encourage the coming of foreign ships to the ports of Canton and Ch'uan-chou in which the sea-trade was centered, and in view of the high market value of the goods of the second category and of the great and growing demand for them, read more read less
