TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method to detect inclusions inside the laserglass, which can generate ghost focus points, and then induce heavy damage on the optical components of the laser.
Abstract: The Megajoules laser works at high fluence. The damage threshold of slabs is limited by platinum inclusions inside the laserglass (Platinum is used for the melt inner sides). The light diffracted by theseinclusions can generate ghost focus points, and then induce heavy damage onthe optical components. The size of each slab is about 800 x 500 x 50 mm, and for the LMJ/NIF projet, totalquantity will be 6000.The size of the inclusions we need to detect is between I and 5 pm.Every single slab must be inspected, so there will be 6 slabs per day to inspectduring the 3 year production run.
