TL;DR: It is suggested that infants' allocation of attentional resources, as measured by distraction latencies, is influenced both by the characteristics of the distractor and by the type of infants' object-directed attention.
Abstract: Two experiments investigated the role of distractor characteristics and type of object-directed attention on infants' distraction latencies during object exploration. In Experiment 1, 7- and 10-month-old infants' distraction latency was a function of both attention and the characteristics of the distractors. Infants took longer to turn toward distractors during focused object-directed attention than when engaged in more casual attention. In addition, their latencies were longer regardless of attention type when the distractors were unimodal (e.g., consisting of only a visual or an auditory component) than when they were bimodal (e.g., consisting of both auditory and visual components). Experiment 2 demonstrated that infants exhibit shorter distraction latencies toward complex than simple bimodal distractors. These results are discussed in the context of Allport's (1989) model of attention and suggest that infants' allocation of attentional resources, as measured by distraction latencies, is influenced both by the characteristics of the distractor and by the type of infants' object-directed attention.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors studied the home mortgage lending of several institutions doing business in the medium-sized urban area of St. Joseph County, Indiana and found tremendous differences between lenders, suggesting that bank practices and policies exert a great impact on how well low income and minority neighborhoods and individuals are served.
Abstract: Numerous studies have documented racial and economic disparities in the home mortgage market. Almost all of these have been done in large urban areas, many of which have long histories of racial conflict and discrimination. Further, little attention has been paid to institutional disparities, i.e., the ways in which mortgage lenders differ among themselves in their community reinvestment performance. In this study, we profile the home mortgage lending of several institutions doing business in the medium-sized urban area of St. Joseph County, Indiana. We find tremendous differences between lenders, suggesting that bank practices and policies exert a great impact on how well low income and minority neighborhoods and individuals are served. Lender characteristics, such as the legal structure of the institution (e.g., commercial bank, credit union, savings and loan), branch locations, and other factors are associated with these disparities. We conclude by suggesting that several heretofore ignored variables need closer examination.

TL;DR: The authors examined the narrative strategies used by Bill Clinton in his 1992 and 1996 campaign biography videos and found that both videos address similar themes, utilize similar aesthetic strategies, and repeat key rhetorical structures.
Abstract: This study examines the narrative strategies used by Bill Clinton in his 1992 and 1996 campaign biography videos. Both videos address similar themes, utilize similar aesthetic strategies, and even repeat key rhetorical structures. In 1996, Clinton substitutes America for Hope as the key organizing symbol of his biography, thereby undermining the liberal Democratic perspective central to The Man From Hope. Instead he offers an image of America that foregrounds traditional Republican values and only makes oblique references to values typically held by Democrats. In doing so, the video biography re-presents Clinton as a moderate, in a creatively ambiguous treatment of the president that seems designed to appeal to a politically diverse America.
