Abstract: A new bifunctional extractant named phenyl-N,N-dibutylcarbamoylmethyl sulfoxide (PCMSO) is synthesized and characterized in order to investigate its selectivity and capability in the extraction from acidic nitrate media in nuclear reprocessing. The extraction of uranium(VI) with PCMSO in toluene has been studied at various concentrations of nitric acid, extractant and salting-out agent (LiNO3). The mechanism of extraction is discussed in the light of the results obtained. The extracted species has also been investigated using FT-IR spectrometry. The related thermodynamic functions were calculated. The IR spectral study was also made of the extracted species.

Abstract: AIM: To evaluate the effects of tetrandrine (Tet) and nimodipine (Nim) on the morphine (Mor) withdrawal response in the isolated guinea pig ileum. METHODS: The withdrawal contracture was elicited by addition of naloxone (Nal) (1 mumol.L-1) to the isolated naive ileum incubated with Mor (3 mumol.L-1) at 37.5 degrees C for 4 h or to the ileum obtained from Mor-dependent guinea pig. RESULTS: When Nim (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mumol.L-1) or Tet (1, 10, and 50 mumol.L-1) was added 1 min before Nal in the naive ilea bathed in Krebs solution containing Mor, or when the ilea from Mor-dependent guinea pigs were incubated with Nim (0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 mumol.L-1) or Tet (1, 10, and 50 mumol.L-1) for 15 min, or when Nim (5 and 10 mg.kg-1, i.p.) or Tet (15 and 30 mg.kg-1, i.p.) was administered in vivo to Mor-dependent guinea pigs, the Nal-precipitated withdrawal contracture was significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: Tet and Nim, Ca2+ channel blockers, could inhibit the Nal-precipitated Mor withdrawal response in the isolated guinea pig ileum.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To reduce the incidence of urinary system injury from gynecology operations. METHODS: 26 cases with urinary system injuries during gynecological operations were analyzed from 1982 to 1996. RESULTS: The incidence of urinary injury in this hospital was 0.34%, and injuries occurred most frequently in the bladder. Among the 17 cases of bladder injuries, 12 occurred during tubal ligation, 3 during cesarean section, and 2 in myomectomy. There were 9 cases of ureter injuries, 6 cases occurred in radical hysterectomy for cervical cancer, 1 in cesarean section with hysterectomy, and 2 in hysterectomy with broad ligament leiomyoma. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that it was important to be familiar with the regional anatomy, to operate strictly and separate those organs carefully in preventing the urinary system injury.
