TL;DR: In this paper, the existence of a canonical desingularization of any variety in characteristic zero, except for V, has been shown, in particular for logarithmic varieties.
Abstract: Let $X$ be any variety in characteristic zero. Let $V \subset X$ be an open subset that has toroidal singularities. We show the existence of a canonical desingularization of $X$ except for V. It is a morphism $f: Y \to X$ , which does not modify the subset $ V $ and transforms $X$ into a toroidal embedding $Y$, with singularities extending those on $V$. Moreover, the exceptional divisor has simple normal crossings on $Y$. The theorem naturally generalizes the Hironaka canonical desingularization. It does not modify the nonsingular locus $V$ and transforms $X$ into a nonsingular variety $Y$. The proof uses, in particular, the canonical desingularization of logarithmic varieties recently proved by Abramovich -Temkin-Wlodarczyk. It also relies on the established here canonical functorial desingularization of locally toric varieties with an unmodified open toroidal subset. As an application, we show the existence of a toroidal equisingular compactification of toroidal varieties. All the results here can be linked to a simple functorial combinatorial desingularization algorithm developed in this paper.

TL;DR: In this paper , a simple and fast embedded resolution of varieties and principalization of ideals in the language of torus actions on ambient smooth schemes with or without SNC divisors is presented.
Abstract: We show a simple and fast embedded resolution of varieties and principalization of ideals in the language of torus actions on ambient smooth schemes with or without SNC divisors. The canonical functorial resolution of varieties in characteristic zero is given by, the introduced here, operations of cobordant blow-ups with smooth weighted centers. The centers are defined by the geometric invariant measuring the singularities on smooth schemes with SNC divisors. As the result of the procedure we obtain a smooth variety with a torus action and the exceptional divisor having simple normal crossings. Moreover, its geometric quotient is birational to the resolved variety, has abelian quotient singularities, and can be desingularized directly by combinatorial methods. The paper is based upon the ideas of the joint work with Abramovich and Temkin and a similar result by McQuillan on resolution in characteristic zero via stack-theoretic weighted blow-ups. As an application of the method we show the resolution of a certain class of isolated singularities in positive and mixed characteristic.

TL;DR: The most prominent American writer of the 20th century, John Steinbeck, has been the subject of an international revival of critical interest in the work of this American writer as discussed by the authors .
Abstract: One of the most prominent American writers of the 20th century. Author of many novels, including Tortilla Flat (1937), The Grapes of Wrath (1939), and East of Eden (1952). In 1940, Steinbeck received the Pulitzer Prize (for The Grapes of Wrath) and, in 1962, the Nobel Prize (for all his writings). Readers have valued Steinbeck for his insightful critique of the American Dream and for his heartfelt depictions of common people. However, critics have accused him of excessive political engagement and sentimentalism. No works of literary criticism devoted solely to Steinbeck have been published in Poland until now. This volume, participating in the international revival of critical interest in the work of this American writer, reminds the reader of the significance of Steinbeck’s literary output.

Abstract: Third-wave feminist fiction is not a universally accepted designation. However, it has been proposed by several scholars as a useful grouping of emerging American writers, who were starting their careers in the 1990s and creating fiction exploring issues of gender identity, while employing what could be termed third-wave sensibility and aesthetics. It should be emphasized that third-wave literature has overwhelmingly consisted of nonfiction – personal essays and memoirs – and that blurring of the boundary between fiction and life writing has been an important political strategy for feminist writers. Some scholars argue that chick lit can be seen as having a strong relationship to the “girlie” strand within third-wave feminism, although others see this type of genre fiction as postfeminist. Some scholars see a connection between third-wave feminism and memoir/fiction that explores writings in which young female protagonists negotiate their intersectional identities, usually focusing on the interplay of race and gender or class and gender; for example, Sapphire's Push (1996). Some suggest that fiction and graphic novels building on the post-punk aesthetics of the Riot Grrrl movement can be read as one of the literary expressions of third-wave feminism (for example, memoir/fiction/poetry by Michelle Tea, Naughty bits comic book series by Roberta Gregory). Because third-wave writings incorporated an intersectional feminist perspective, their overtly feminist agenda was much less explicit than the agenda of consciousness-raising novels associated with the second wave of feminism.
