TL;DR: Soper and Thornton as discussed by the authors report on a study that constitutes a valuable addition to the literature in this subject, and their model is one that should be examined carefully by everyone interested in research in economic education.
Abstract: There is a growing interest in various schemes for individualizing instruction in economics, and at least 50 studies have been made of some aspect of this approach. Soper and Thornton report on a study that constitutes a valuable addition to the literature in this subject. Perhaps more important than the results of their experiment, however, is the experimental design they used. Their model is one that should be examined carefully by everyone interested in research in economic education.

TL;DR: Doubt is cast on the accuracy of the results reported by Frohliger and Kane concerning the acid character of rain and the assumption that strong acids account for the presently observed pH value is discredited.
Abstract: Doubt is cast on the accuracy of the results reported by Frohliger and Kane concerning the acid character of rain. They do not believe that the pH of rainfall was ever controlled by the solubility of CO/sub 2/ in the precipitation and discredit the assumption that strong acids account for the presently observed pH value. The specific issue is exactly what acid species are responsible for the ambient pH values that Frohliger and Kane observed. Total acidity values as reported by them are informative but not adequate to answer this question. Only a complete chemical analysis of their samples would provide the necessary information. Lacking such independent data, total acidity values can be variously interpreted.

TL;DR: Three hundred eighty-five advanced doctoral students from 102 training programs in clinical, clinical--community, and community psychology participated in as assessment of their training in community psychology/community mental health (CP/CMH).
Abstract: Three hundred eighty-five advanced doctoral students from 102 training programs in clinical, clinical--community, and community psychology participated in as assessment of their training in community psychology/community mental health (CP/CMH). Significant findings included: (a) 66% consider training in CP/CMH as very helpful to their career goals, (b) 54% are very much interested in post-doctoral training in CP/CMH, and (c) 62% consider the training in CP/CMH available in their graduate programs below adequate. Respondents rated the coverage and adequacy of coverage of 30 CP/CMH-related topics. Only four topics were reported by 50% or more of the respondents as having been covered. For the 30 topics, reported adequacy of coverage ranged from 40% to 67%; the percentage of respondents who considered coverage inadequate ranged from 18% to 56%.

TL;DR: It was concluded that impaired avoidance learning following chronic esposure to alcohol is not specific to dependency models of animal alcoholism.
Abstract: Weanling male and female rats were chronically exposed to alcohol for 50 days using an intermittent inhalation technique which does not cause alcohol dependency. After 17 days of no exposure to alcohol, animals began two-way active avoidance testing. Results indicated that males were impaired on this task and females were not while at the same time males had reduced body weights. The male weight reduction was not responsible for the avoidance impairment. It was concluded that impaired avoidance learning following chronic esposure to alcohol is not specific to dependency models of animal alcoholism.

TL;DR: Tissue-specific variations of enzyme activity occur: the specific activity of acid phosphatase in the frog femoral diaphysis is 437-, 2-, 3- and 1.2-fold greater than activities in the plasma, coracoid, femoral epiphysis, and femoral metaphysis, respectively.
Abstract: 1. 1. The basic characteristics of acid phosphatase in amphibian skeletal tissues and plasma are similar to those of mammals. 2. 2. The pH optimum of frog bone acid phosphatase is 4.2, while that of plasma is 4.4; at higher pH levels, enzyme activity rapidly declines. 3. 3. Normal kinetic patterns of acid phosphatase activity occur when substrate and enzyme concentrations, and time and temperature of incubation in enzyme assays are varied. 4. 4. Plasma acid phosphatase is thermolabile, losing 22% of its activity at room temperature (1 hr); half-inactivation occurs at 60°C. In contrast, bone acid phosphatase is thermostable, retaining its original activity from 25 to 80°C. 5. 5. Frog bone acid phosphatase is not particle-bound to heavy components of bone mineral or matrix, and is localized within the lysosomes of skeletal cells. 6. 6. Tissue-specific variations of enzyme activity occur: the specific activity of acid phosphatase in the frog femoral diaphysis is 437-, 2-, 3- and 1.2-fold greater than activities in the plasma, coracoid, femoral epiphysis, and femoral metaphysis, respectively.

Abstract: Three major social psychological theories were applied to data obtained in interviews with a random sample of 50 exsmokers and 50 smokers. The objective was to test the utility of these theories with respect to smoking behavior development and change. The results provided strong support for the hypotheses derived from reference group theory and partial support for the cognitive dissonance and psychoanalytic hypotheses.

TL;DR: The results support the hypothesis of Murphy and Brown (1970), who suggested that hippocampal lesions may selectively release locomotor behavior in the rat, that these same animals were identical to controls in consummatory responding.
Abstract: Approach and consummatory responses were measured in rats with hippocampal lesions. Compared to normal and neocortically damaged animals, rats with hippocampal lesions exhibited increased frequency of locomotor responses. These same animals, however, were identical to controls in consummatory responding. The results support the hypothesis of Murphy and Brown (1970), who suggested that hippocampal lesions may selectively release locomotor behavior in the rat.

TL;DR: The phase hypothesis is supported with evidence from Guttman scales and a correlational analysis of how black and lower-class as compared to white and middle-class students shift from one phase to another over the course of the freshman year.
Abstract: The converse of authoritarianism has not been conceptualized very clearly though scales purporting to measure nonauthoritarianism are among the most commonly used in. personality inventories. Using the Autonomy scale of the Omnibus Personality Inventory (a derivative of the original California F scale), as administered to a sample population of beck and white college freshmen, the dimensions of nonauthoritarianism were explored. A factor analysis of the scale creates three components (anti-authoritarianism, anti-conventionalism and open-mindedness) that are conceived of as successive phases in the weakening of authoritarianism. This phase hypothesis is supported with evidence from Guttman scales and a correlational analysis of how black and lower-class as compared to white and middle-class students shift from one phase to another over the course of the freshman year.

TL;DR: Daily hormone treatment for 1 week elevates acid phosphatase activity in plasma and all skeletal tissues studied except femoral epiphysis and a significant hypercalcemia accompanies the enzymatic changes in skeletal tissues and plasma.
Abstract: 1. 1. Acid phosphatase activity is influenced by parathyroid hormone in amphibian skeletal tissues and plasma. 2. 2. The enzymatic response to parathormone is tissue-specific, varying in time, magnitude and direction of change. 3. 3. The diaphysis and epiphysis of the femur respond slowly to parathyroid extract treatment; at 1 hr after injection, acid phosphatase activities were little changed from control levels, but subsequently, a progressive increase was observed. Plasma enzyme activity rises through 4 hr. 4. 4. The metaphyseal plate of the femur and the spongy coracoid bone of the pectoral girdle respond rapidly and strongly to hormone treatment; from 1–4 hr after injection, their acid phosphatase activities are significantly elevated. 5. 5. Daily hormone treatment for 1 week elevates acid phosphatase activity in plasma and all skeletal tissues studied except femoral epiphysis. On day 8, enzyme activity of the latter had sharply declined. 6. 6. A significant hypercalcemia accompanies the enzymatic changes in skeletal tissues and plasma.

TL;DR: Self-monitoring was successfully used in modifying a patient's undesirable behaviors and reduced a second disruptive behavior, daydreaming while studying, but the onset of abdominal pains forced the termination of this study.
Abstract: Stmrnma~y.-Self-monitoring was successfully used in modifying a patient's undesirable behaviors. The initial unwanted behavior, nose squeezing, was appreciably decreased over a 2-mo. period and gains were maintained for over 2 yr. While self-monitoring also reduced a second disruptive behavior, daydreaming while studying, the onset of abdominal pains forced che termination of this study. The present study, therefore, demonstrated a successful and unsuccessful application of self-monitoring. Several investigators have begun studying the effectiveness of self-monitoring in reducing problem behaviors. Tharp and Wetzel (1767), for example, found that clients' problems were successFully modified 7% of the time when patients simply collected baseline data. Other investigators employing selfmonitoring techniques have attained success in reducing the number of cigarettes smoked ( McFall, 1770; McFall & Harnmen, 177 1 ), improving academic grades (Johnson & White, 1971) and studying (Broden, Hall, & Mitts, 1971), eliminating auditory hallucinations (Rutner & Bugle, 1969), alleviating insomnia (Jason, in press), decreasing face touching (Lipinski & Nelson, 1974), changing rates of taUting (Gottman & McFall, 1772), eliminating repetitive scratching, fingernail biting, and inappropriate hand raising in a classroom (Maletdcy, 1974). These findings suggest self-monitoring can produce positive changes in a diverse group of behaviors. Most of the above studies have only assessed the short-term effectiveness of self-monitoring. Furthermore, the impact of such behavioral techniques on nontargeted areas of patient's functioning have rarely been evaluated. The present study investigated (1) the long-term efficacy of self-monitoring procedures and (2) the effects self-monitoring exerted on areas of functioning not specified for treatment.
