TL;DR: Five cases of heart failure, resulting from a cerebral arteriovenous fistula and aneurysm of the great vein of Galen, are reported and early diagnosis can be made by auscultation of the head and cerebral arteriography in infants who develop heart failure.
Abstract: Five cases of heart failure, resulting from a cerebral arteriovenous fistula and aneurysm of the great vein of Galen, are reported. In two infants the diagnosis was made roentgenographically; one improved after arterial ligation. In four cases, autopsy demonstrated the anomalous vessels and dilatation or hypertrophy of the heart. In three cases there was spongy necrosis of the brain. The pathogenesis of heart failure seems to be related to an enormous increase of the intake of the right atrium and ventricle. The cerebral damage seems to be due to ischemia caused by shunting of blood toward the veins bypassing the capillary network. Early diagnosis can be made by auscultation of the head and cerebral arteriography in infants who develop heart failure. Treatment is discussed.

TL;DR: It is postulated that ACTH can promote the association of the enzyme tyrosinase with the preformed structure of unmelanized granules.
Abstract: The induction of melanization in xanthic goldfish scales with ACTH in vitro has been studied by light and electron microscopy utilizing ammoniated silver nitrate staining of premelanin and melanin. The melanized cells (melanophores and melanocytes) and the yellow pigmented cells (lipophores and the newly described lipocytes) were found to possess many similarities at the levels of cellular and subcellular structure. The latter cells contain characteristic cytoplasmic bodies which react positively to the premelanin stain. Changes accompanying ACTH stimulation of goldfish scales in tissue culture suggest that these bodies in the lipocytes and lipophores can become melanized. Electron micrographs illustrate the intermediate staining of newly formed melanin granules in an induced melanocyte and the appearance of a transitional melanolipophore. It is postulated that ACTH can promote the association of the enzyme tyrosinase with the preformed structure of unmelanized granules.

TL;DR: In this article, a dual-purpose system for chromatographic separation of estrogens is described, where the impregnating material of the stationary phase (p-toluene sulfonic acid) is used as a color reagent after the separation is complete.
Abstract: A new technic has been described for the chromatographic separation of estrogens. It includes the use of a dual-purpose system where the impregnating material of the stationary phase (p-toluene sulfonic acid) is used as a color reagent after the separation is complete. This novel approach precludes the need for a spraying or dipping step to achieve the desired color reaction. Quantitation by densitometry and fluorescence is also detailed.

TL;DR: Studies indicate that the open-combustion technic is a reliable screening system for the handling of large numbers of samples and obviates any cross-contamination problem.
Abstract: A procedure is described for the screening of serum samples for contamination with iodine. It is extremely rapid, obviates any cross-contamination problem, and is not influenced by the organic compounds of raw serum or filtrates. Studies indicate that the open-combustion technic is a reliable screening system for the handling of large numbers of samples.
