TL;DR: In this article, the first reported viscosity measurements on cholesteryl myristate esters were made at lower shear rates than previously reported for esters of cholesterol by using a Weissenberg Rheogoniometer.
Abstract: This investigation provides the first reported viscosity measurements on cholesteryl myristate. Viscosities were measured as a function of both temperature and shear over temperatures corresponding to the isotropic liquid, the cholesteric mesophase, and the smectic mesophase. The myristate ester was chosen for study because its multiple phase transitions have been previously shown to be reproducible. The phases also persist over relatively long temperature ranges. The viscosity measurements were made at lower shear rates than previously reported for esters of cholesterol by using a Weissenberg Rheogoniometer. These are the first cone-and-plate viscosity measurements reported for any esters of cholesterol. The shear rates in this cone-and-plate viscometer are homogeneous and variable. The results show large breaks in viscosity behavior at the independently-measured thermodynamic transitions between the crystal, smectic, cholesteric, and isotropic states. Viscosities for the isotropic state are New...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a method in which the fabric is heated by steam or hot water and subjected to a mechanical impact such as vibration or jumping, and at the same time, carried along a treating surface owing to the effects of the heating fluid and the mechanical impact.
Abstract: Textile fabric which has residual inner stresses can be uniformly continuously relaxed by a method in which the fabric is heated by steam or hot water and subjected to a mechanical impact such as vibration or jumping, and at the same time, carried along a treating surface owing to the effects of the heating fluid and the mechanical impact. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a carrying plate for fabric to be relaxed, a heating medium jetting means corresponding to the carrying plate, and an impact-exerting mechanism. By the method and the apparatus, the textile fabric can be uniformly and continuously relaxed without any fixed wrinkles, and results in suitable handling, bulkiness and dimensional stability.

Abstract: An automatic flow control valve is formed of a housing defining a valve chamber and a valve body axially displaceable within the valve chamber. The juxtaposed surfaces of the valve chamber and valve body form a flow passageway through the valve and are arranged to avoid any sudden changes in the cross-sectional flow area. TL;DR: In this paper, a fuel injection system for a diesel engine has a plunger barrel with a fuel intake port and slidable axially in the barrel, and a switching device is used to rotate the plunger between a starting position and a running position.
Abstract: A fuel injection system for a diesel engine has a plunger barrel with a fuel intake port and a plunger slidable axially in the barrel. A plunger operating cam has a pair of lobes for operating the plunger. During either the intake or the compression stroke, the cam advances the plunger to a first position blocking the port to inject fuel, after which the plunger retracts. At the end of the compression stroke, the cam advances the plunger further to a second position to block the port to inject fuel. A switching device is effective to rotate the plunger between a starting position and a running position. In the starting position, the peripheral surface of the plunger blocks the port during the two fuel injection strokes of the plunger and, in the running position, the plunger is rotated to a position where its peripheral surface blocks the port only upon the further advance of the plunger to the second position. The invention improvement comprises at least one fuel passage in the plunger connecting the peripheral surface to the inner end face of the plunger and communicating with a by-pass fuel intake port in the barrel, only during starting of the engine, and in the second plunger position. The by-pass fuel intake port is spaced angularly from the main fuel intake port.

Abstract: A floatable casing which is adapted to be positioned around two hull sections of a vessel to be joined while they are in the water includes two sections or portions which are hinged together centrally and each of which includes a plurality of tanks which are adapted to be filled or emptied of sea water for the purposes of floating them, or positioning them in place around the bottom and sides of a hull section to be welded to another section. Each section includes a vertically elongated tank at each side which is adapted to extend upwardly on each side of the vessel to be joined together. Each section defines a continuous beltlike working space preferably at least as high as a man which is adapted to be enclosed in a watertight manner when the device is applied around the hull sections to be joined in a manner such that the separation plane of the hull sections lies in the working space. The device is first floated to the area of the two hull sections and then is submerged by filling the tanks at each end to cause the sections to pivot to an opened form and permit them to be inserted below the bottom of the vessel sections. The sections are moved together and the tanks of the casing structure are then ballasted to give sufficient buoyancy to the device to cause it to bear with resilient water proof portions thereof tightly against the two hull portions which are to be joined together. Thereafter the working space which is aligned with the dividing plane of the two hull sections is freed of sea water by pumping the water out of the space. The side sections are sufficiently high to permit entry of workmen from either side of the vessel and complete movement of the workmen in the passage space defined by the device, to effect the joining of the vessel parts together.
