Abstract: An electro-optical device employing liquid crystal cell, which consists of a first electrode and a second electrode opposed to the first electrode, at least one of which being light-transparent, and a liquid crystal sandwiched between the first and second electrodes, is driven by voltage pulses with special wave form and changes in its optical transmission or reflection. The liquid crystal is cholesteric liquid crystal having positive dielectric anisotropy. A first circuit connected to the first electrode generates a.c. voltage pulse having phase phi 1 for time duration T1 and a d.c. bias voltage of the same amplitude as that of the a.c. voltage pulse. A second circuit connected to the second electrode generates a.c. voltage having the same amplitude, the same bias as that of the a.c. voltage pulse and phase phi 1 switchable to another phase phi 2 for time interval T2 which is varied with the change of a signal such as image signal. This technique is extended to an X-Y matrix display device which has plural display elements formed at intersections of plural X-electrodes and plural Y-electrodes opposing to and crossing the X-electrodes with a gap.

Abstract: A thin layer of thermoluminescent material is formed on a substrate to form an image storage panel. A radiation image is projected onto the panel, and is stored by the thermoluminescent material. For reading, the panel is scanned by an infrared laser beam, and thermoluminescence proportional to the dose is emitted at the point of impingement of the laser beam. By scanning the storage panel with the laser beam, and by detecting the thermoluminescence, a series of emissions is obtained in the form of a video signal which is used to drive a display device.

Method and apparatus for uninterrupted recording and reproduction in a multichannel mode of information on tape

Abstract: A tape information playback and recording system operating in a multichannel mode is arranged to provide uninterrupted recording or reproduction of information from a tape recorded in a multichannel track configuration mode. The system includes a pair of tape reels, a pair of spaced-apart tape drives for pulling the tape in opposite directions through the system, a pair of tape head systems positioned in spaced-apart relation each tape head system being associated with a tape drive, and a tape accumulator positioned between the tape heads and tape drives. The tape accumulator stores tape when the tape moves through the system in a forward direction. During reversal of the direction of tape travel, the tape accumulator supplies tape in both the forward and reverse directions simultaneously while tape is depleted from the accumulator to permit reversal of the direction of tape travel without loss of information.

Abstract: This invention is characterized by apparatus for detecting whether an object having information to be read-out is located in a scanning light beam. Means are provided for starting or stopping operation of the light source, passing or cutting off the light beam by the detected output. The apparatus includes means for converting the light beam emitted from a light source to a scanning light beam by using a deflection means, means for applying the scanning light beam onto the object and means for reading-out the information contained in the object from the light beam reflected by the object.

Abstract: A fibre-optics faceplate for displaying an optical image of high image contrast that is suitable for visual observation under high-intensity ambient illumination. The faceplate is a bundle of side-by-side optical fibres, each having a core with a low numerical aperture of below about 0.4, cladding therearound having an index of refraction less than that of the core, and a light-absorbent glass layer around the cladding. The outer surface of the bundle is roughened and has a coating thereon with an index of refraction less than that of the cores. The inner surface has a fluorescent material thereon for emitting optical signals by application thereto of electrical signals.

The catch means is moved into and out of the position to engage the latch member by means of a leverage linkage and the movement of the catch member into and out of the position to engage the latch member is transmitted to electric switch means through the leverage linkage. The door is opened only after the switch means has been made open.
